Job summary

The successful applicant will join a team of five dedicated

Consultant Urological Surgeons to provide a consultant-led comprehensive and modern urological service to the local population. Bedford Hospital NHS Trust provides healthcare services to a population of 300,000 living in county town of Bedford and surrounding areas of North Bedfordshire. The applicants are expected to have good experience in core urology.

The new appointee will be expected to assist in the development and provision of core urological services at Bedford Hospital NHS Trust and will be provided opportunities to develop a career in urology. The successful candidate will be expected to actively participate in audit and research. The Trust is committed to provide high quality care at all times.

Main duties of the job

The department of urology is a cohesive unit that provides a full range of core urology service, with each of the consultants having a sub-specialty interest in addition. All new referrals are seen in the efficiently run Urology One-stop clinic attended by all consultants. Additional specialty services include

  • Endourology service including upper tract laparoscopy & retro-pertonial laparoscopy ? Full stone service including ESWL, PCNL, Mini-PCNL, flexible ureteroscopy and laser ? Daycase Holmium Laser Enucleation Of Prostate (HoLEP) service.
  • Bladder dysfunction with consultant led urodynamic service including female
  • Transperineal Precision Point Biopsy with option of MRI/USS fusion.
  • DaVinci XI Robotic System - Robotic Urology in addition to Laparoscopic Surgery

The department runs a number of specialist clinics. These are all well supported by a highly trained

team of specialist nurses. The department has close links with Addenbrookes Hospital (Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation Trust), which also provides the radical pelvic cancer service with patients referred via weekly specialist MDT meeting.

Job responsibilities

The appointee will be based at Bedford Hospital. The emergency on-call commitment is 1:4 for weekdays (daytime only) and the weekends (daytime and non-resident overnight) with appropriate rest days. During the week, out-of-hours support is provided by the on-call surgical registrar.

The post would therefore be suitable for those trainees who wish to obtain or add to their existing Urology experience and make themselves competitive for training post interviews for Urology, or those who wish widen their Urology experience and pursue a career in Urology. We would support senior surgeons wishing to complete their training portfolios, ready for CESR application.

The appointee should expect from time to time to fit in with alterations in circumstances, such as changes in staffing, introduction of new services, expansion or reduction of existing services and implementation and review of Annual Programmes. The successful candidate may be required to undertake duties at other hospitals and health premises within the area.

Experience

  • Completion of Foundation training or equivalent followed by 3 years Clinical experience in Urology / Surgery in UK or overseas

Knowledge

Essential

  • oSound comprehensive knowledge of common medicine / surgical emergencies,
  • oPre-operative and postoperative management of Surgical / urological patients. Experience in core urological surgery along with proven track record in safe and efficient surgery

Desirable

  • Good computer skills with oMicrosoft word and outlook

  • oGood organisational ability with some experience in issues of management
