Job responsibilities

1.1. To maintain up to date knowledge of and adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct and other regulations, and Trust policies and protocols for example the storage and administration of drugs.

1.2. Use good communication skills to disseminate information and promote and maintain good working relationships within the department and trust wide.

1.3. Promote the use of communications skills to overcome language and understanding difficulties when discussing complex or sensitive issues relating to diagnosis, prognosis and treatment with patients and their relatives. Be able to communicate effectively with patients, relatives and the multidisciplinary team both face to face and over the phone.

1. Clinical Governance/ Incident & Accident Reporting

2.1. Responsible for ensuring that all accidents/incidents are reported to the appropriate Manager and reported via the Datix reporting system. All employees are required & expected to participate in the Trusts accident/incident reporting system and to comply with the Trusts procedures and techniques for managing risks.

2.2. Maintain and share up to date knowledge of current research relevant to emergency care.

1. General Management

3.3.1. Responsible for regular cleaning of equipment, reporting faults to shift manager and removing defective equipment from use. This includes participation in daily checking and cleaning or equipment/ drugs as per department quality book.

3.2. Take responsibility for the safe storage of patients valuable and property whilst in the Emergency Department in line with trust policy.

3.3 Take on management responsibility for junior members of the team including 1:1s, appraisals, sickness management etc.

1. Teaching and Learning

4.1. It is mandated that all registered healthcare professionals nursing included, are compliant with new SSSA standards for pre registrants as practice supervisors as a bare minimum moving on to also becoming practice assessors after 12 months in the department.

4.2. To support education, training and development of self and others in the emergency department and actively encourage to share learning and best practices in Emergency Medicine.

1. Total Patient Experience

5.1. Assist, in conjunction with the Emergency Department Matron, the Practice Development Nurse and Heads of Nursing for Emergency and Acute Care directorate, to continue to develop and set standards of care, taking into account relevant published National Guidelines and research.

5.2. To undergo, where necessary, further training in relation to the Extended Role of the Nurse and participate in the training of others.

5.3. To ensure communication with paramedical services to enable them to carry out their part in patient care and to create a climate in which feedback on patient progress is the norm.

1. Major Incident

6.1. To maintain and up to date knowledge of the trust Major Incident Policy and Department and Role specific plan

6.2. In the event of a major incident being declared and a call in of staff being undertaken you should report to the Nurse in charge of ED as soon as possible.

6.3. Undertake training and remain competent in the use of decontamination equipment for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) contaminated patients.

1. Safeguarding of Children and Vulnerable Adults

7.1. Promote the wellbeing and safeguarding of children, young people and vulnerable adults by implementing the Trusts policy and procedures, acting promptly on concerns, communicating effectively and sharing information appropriately.

• Current registration as a registered Nurse (Paediatric Nursing ) on the NMC register
