Job summary

An exciting new opportunity has arisen within the Paediatric Physiotherapy department for a band 6 senior physiotherapist. The post will be full time 37.5 hours per week based at the Child Development Centre.

As the post-holder you will be expected to have NHS experience in managing paediatric patients. Your caseload would be a mixed caseload seeing a variety of paediatric conditions dependent on referrals. Full training and support will be provided. There are also opportunities to support physiotherapy into our in-patient acute paediatric ward at Bedford Hospital - South Wing site.

You will be working as part of a team within busy Child Development Centre, where there is great diversity in our client group. You should have a sound knowledge and understanding of the importance of managing patients and their families who present with complex conditions, with a sensitive, reassuring and professional approach.

There will be the opportunity to undertake further post graduate training, and regular in house supervision and training, to develop your skills and expertise.

Main duties of the job

To assess, treat and manage own caseload gaining clinical experience in the physiotherapeutic treatment of paediatric patients with a diverse range of physical and psychological conditions. Undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner. To liaise with the wider multi-disciplinary team and assist in the development of the paediatric physiotherapy service

Job responsibilities

  1. Manage own caseload of patients referred, taking responsibility for assessing, treating and discharging these patients
  2. Work in a variety of settings which includes schools, homes and the acute paediatric ward
  3. Supervise and teach less experienced physiotherapists, assistants, under-graduate physiotherapy students and work experience students
  4. To undertake a comprehensive assessment of patients, including those with complex presentations/multi-pathologies and use advanced clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis of their condition
  5. Use clinical reasoning skills and evaluate outcomes of treatments to continually reassess and develop treatment programmes
  6. Establish accurate prognosis and recommend best course of intervention and develop comprehensive treatment and discharge plans
  7. Assess patients understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid consent having capacity to work within legal framework with patients who lack ability to consent to treatment
  8. To be responsible for management of clinical risk of own caseload
  9. To work within Trust and CSP guidelines, have a good working knowledge of national and local standards and monitor own and other qualities of practice in liaison with senior physiotherapists
  10. To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient records in line with Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Standards of Practice and Local Standards
  11. To be responsible for the safe use and competent use of all gymnasium equipment, patient appliances, electrotherapy equipment, ensuring other physiotherapy staff and patients are competent to use this equipment and all equipment patients take home have written and verbal instructions
  12. When working in out-reach clinics, schools and homes, work safely as lone practitioner using telephone support as necessary and appropriately.
  13. To provide specialist advice to physiotherapy colleagues working within other clinical areas, regarding the treatment of children
