We have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Midwife to join our management team. You will work alongside the Midwifery Matrons promoting safety and excellent clinical care. We are looking for a committed practitioner who can demonstrate their collaborative skills in ensuring that the unit staffing levels and staff skill mix remains safe.
You will need excellent leadership qualities, be a good communicator and have the ability to challenge practice. You will be instrumental in supporting the senior team in implementing the Better Births agenda within our Maternity services.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will have a clear understanding or workforce safe staffing and how this can affect patient flow through maternity services.They will be the first contact to minimise service disruption and will be skilled in recognising escalation triggers.
They will have experience in clinical incident management and have been involved in the reduction of risk through reporting, training and dissemination.
They will have excellent collaborative and communication skills, liaising with our sister hospital, the Trust Operational team and the wider MDT. They will be able to provide support to the Roster Planners to minimise staffing gaps.
To adhere to the Trust's policies and procedures, acting promptly on concerns, communicating effectively and sharing information appropriately. Maintaining clinical competence and supporting the unit clinically during periods of escalation.
To remain up to date with research and recommendations. To support students, junior staff and other healthcare professional as a mentors and sign off mentors and assessors to ensure that the hospital/community midwifery experience meets the required practical and educational standards.
The day to day operational management of the maternity services ensuring that the care of service users is prioritised. Supporting the wellbeing of staff through appraisals, annual leave allocation, training compliance and sickness management.

Our Maternity Services work collaboratively over two sites. The post holder will be based at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital whilst working closely with their counterpart at the Bedford Hospital. We have a single cross site Director of Midwifery, who leads a Head of Midwifery of the L&D site. She is supported by a Deputy Head of Midwifery and three Matrons. The post holder will support the management structure whilst working alongside the Ward Managers and service leads.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Midwifery Operational Manager has a responsibility to provide clinical and operational midwifery leadership with support and direction from the Senior Leadership team, to ensure the effective and safe running of the maternity unit during the week, night shifts, weekends & Bank Holidays.
The post holder will maintain a visible professional presence where patients, carers and staff can turn for senior assistance, advice and support and upon whom they can rely to ensure that the fundamental and specialist aspects of care are met.
It includes the management of staff and being accountable for the quality of services (both clinical and non-clinical) delivered within the span of authority. This includes redeployment of staff to meet the needs of the service across the maternity setting.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Having a clear understanding of Workforce Staffing
- Have an understanding of the processs supporting patient flow through maternity services.
- To ensure appropriate care pathways for patients according to their clinical need to ensure they are in the right place for care to minimise service disruption.
- Recognising the trigger factors associated with the Maternity and Trust Escalation policy in order to minimise bed crisis through effective planning and how to implement the strategy when necessary.
- To have an understanding of and liaise with the Trusts Main Operations Centre and regularly attending Site Safety meetings to report staffing levels and quality issues.
- Recognising the need for escalating admission, discharge, safeguarding and patient flow issues, to the Midwifery Managers and be aware of the strategies that can be employed to address critical bed states/maximise staffing.
- Developing working relationships with all staff in order to coordinate the patient flow process.
- Daily communication with our sister site at Bedford, along with other Trusts & Health Care providers in the area regarding capacity to support when the daily management of the Maternity Unit and during periods of escalation.
- To provide data collection from Red Flag reporting, staff redeployments, emergency calls to optimise safety and provide analytics to facilitate best redeployment for staff.
- To support the Roster planners to ensure appropriate skill mix of staff across all areas of maternity.
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Promote the wellbeing and safeguarding of children and young people by implementing the Trusts policy and procedures, acting promptly on concerns, communicating effectively and sharing information appropriately.
- Maintaining clinical competence and supporting the unit clinically during periods of escalation.
- Liaise with all care agencies to facilitate seamless approach to maternity care.
- Practice within boundaries of autonomy as described by the NMC Code 2015.
- Record and report any untoward incidents and to take action to address identified risks.

- Promote health and wellbeing through practice and education of service users and staff.
EDUCATION

MANAGEMENT
