Job summary
As an Emergency Medicine Consultant based at the Bedford Hospital site you will join our enthusiastic and dynamic team and take on a key leadership role in helping us continue to deliver excellence in clinical care, training and governance within the department.
Our Emergency Department provides a comprehensive emergency medicine service for North and part of Central Bedfordshire with a rapidly expanding population upwards of 300,000. There has been a steady increase in the annual attendance to the ED with a disproportionate increase in the number of emergency medical admissions and complexity of cases. The ED now sees over 80,000 patients per year, around 20% of whom are children. The Emergency Department is also a dedicated Trauma Unit within the East of England Trauma Network.
The department is currently undergoing the final phases of a major re-development which has delivered a larger footprint with a dedicated paediatric ED, and improved staff facilities. An ED CT scanning suite is due to be completed over the coming months.
You should be MB ChB, FRCEM (or equivalent), and be on the GMC's specialist register in Emergency Medicine (or eligible for entry within 6 months). The ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, is as important as being able to cope under pressure whilst remaining calm. Sub-specialty and teaching interests are valued and encouraged within our team.
