Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a compassionate and highly motivated Occupational Therapist to join our inpatient Occupational Therapy team. The post is based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in South Manchester.

This full time position sits within the adult clinical, medical and surgical Oncology cohort, with opportunities to develop skills and knowledge in specialist Haematology and Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) services.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be encouraged to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, utilising excellent interpersonal skills within the inpatient setting and with the relevant community services to ensure a seamless transfer of care for our patients.

As an autonomous practitioner, the post holder is expected to assess and treat Oncology and palliative care patients with guidance and supervision from senior Occupational Therapists. They will be expected to maintain a caseload of patients and be able to plan and prioritise effectively. The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in clinical audit, CPD and the in-service training rota, and will be required to complete the relevant mandatory training.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical To undertake occupational therapy assessments of functional abilities and provide individualised treatment plans, rehabilitation and equipment, to maximise independence both in hospital and for safe discharge home. To be professionally responsible for your own caseload and using evidenced-based practice, apply patient centred principles to complete interventions. To use clinical reasoning skills to address occupational performance deficits during the assessment process, enabling independence in areas of self-maintenance and productivity. To monitor, evaluate and modify treatment for patients in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of intervention. To manage clinical risk within own patient caseload and in own work area. To demonstrate and apply a broad level of understanding of the effects of cancer diagnosis and treatment for individuals throughout their treatment journey. Provide a high level of targeted psychological support to patients and their families/friends To assess patients for occupational therapy and specialist equipment e.g. wheelchairs and hoists. To always work in a manner that respects peoples culture, privacy, dignity and individuality. To be an effective member of the multi-disciplinary team and actively participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings. To communicate discharge plans and Occupational Therapy intervention to patients and relatives and the multi-disciplinary team members. To ensure effective communication of complex and sensitive patient related information to ensure effective collaborative working between multi-disciplinary team members. To make appropriate and timely referrals to external agencies To maintain accurate professional documentation in line with the Royal College of Occupational Therapy standards and local policies and procedures. To contribute to documentation monitoring as required. To liaise regularly with senior colleagues regarding caseloads, treatment progression and on-going care. To assist where necessary in the provision of cover for the department as a whole in times of annual leave/sickness etc. To be responsible for the safe and competent use of all occupational therapy equipment and ensure that assistants, occupational therapy students, carers and other health care professionals attain competency prior to use. To produce timely and informative reports and discharge summaries for other agencies, e.g. GPs, consultants, social services, primary care colleagues, as requested, to ensure effective and seamless pathways of care. Delegate appropriate work load to the Occupational Therapy Assistants. Be aware of restrictions COVID19 within the clinical areas and how the pandemic affects patient care and discharge planning.
