DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
PROFESSIONAL/COMMUNICATION
1. Demonstrate a pleasant, approachable, and proactive manner to create and promote a good working relationship amongst the PG & UG Education Team, Clinical Skills Training Team, within the Christie Institute for Cancer Education and the clinical divisions.
2. Adhere to uniform policy to maintain a professional appearance.
3. Work autonomously managing own workload in designated clinical areas. Work as part of the team to deliver static training sessions.
4. Prioritise, plan and coordinate the delivery of the clinical skills education to nursing, AHP and medical learners. Liaise with the Clinical Skills Training Manager to ensure that current skills and personal learning are up to date.
5. Be responsible for liaising with learners, supervisors and assessor, and educators in designated learning environments to assess needs and monitor competencies and update PARE and team dashboards as appropriate.
6. Attend and actively participate in departmental and Trust committees, providing reports and information relating to the work of the clinical skills training for learners and feedback to PG & UG Education team.
7. Be aware of own limitations and that of others, seeking advice and guidance as required.
8. Act as a specialist resource/support for the Trust in relation to clinical skills education training, preceptorship and medical devices training processes and liaise with the PG&UG Education team, clinical skills team and/or multi-disciplinary team as appropriate.
9. Demonstrate effective written, verbal and nonverbal communication skills, with team colleagues, staff in designated learning environments and other staff trust wide and externally, at all levels on a range of matters relating to clinical skills training provision/developments.
10. Manage difficult conversations with staff and learners in designated learning environments maintaining confidentiality at all times and escalate to senior colleagues and university advisors/personal tutors as appropriate.
11. Provide pastoral care for learners across all professions and support the Practice Education Coordinator and Undergraduate Education Manager to ensure all learners have a supportive and high-quality learning experience.
12. Demonstrate effective use of Microsoft word, excel and outlook IT packages adhering to trust and IT governance policies at all times.
13. Demonstrate a professional and keen interest in the overall work of the Christie Institute for Cancer Education.
14. Review and monitor PARE evaluation scores and report internally to senior staff, managers and PELs.
15. Provide advice and guidance and pastoral support for learners in difficulty and liaise with PELs and HEI partners where necessary.
16. Provide advice and guidance for the assessment process for learners and support PELs, educators, assessors and supervisors where required.
PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
1. Be accountable to Undergraduate Education Manager for identifying training gaps, raising areas of priority, and develop and deliver clinical skills training programmes and supporting documents and policies to a range of healthcare learners across professions, in large/smalls groups and/or on a 1:1 basis.
2. Evaluate and adapt delivery of training dependent upon assessment of current level of knowledge, skills and experience of the learner.
3. Coordinate, facilitate and deliver formal clinical skills training days e.g. book rooms, speakers.
4. Supervise and monitor in collaboration with the Preceptorship Lead the preceptorship and medical devices training processes in designated clinical areas.
5. Adapt delivery of training dependent upon assessment of current level of knowledge, skills and experience of the learner.
6. Devise, develop and review training materials, presentations and policies under the direction of the Clinical Skills Training Manager.
7. Maintain and develop own knowledge, skills and competence in relation to clinical practice and clinical skills training. Proactively engage in annual appraisal with line manager.
8. Participate in clinical supervision/ professional mentoring/coaching. Support the delivery of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) for preceptees and learners.
9. Practice according to the NMC code and relevant professional guidelines across departments.
10. Ensure own essential training is maintained.
SERVICE IMPROVEMENT AND QUALITY
1. Be accountable to the Undergraduate Education Manager when leading on the design, operational collation of data, evaluation, report writing and presentation of results for audits relevant to the work of the Clinical Skills Training Team.
2. Be responsible to the Undergraduate Education Manager when handling the investigation of clinical incidents relevant to the work of the Clinical Skills Training for learners.
3. Lead collating and maintaining training and development records in designated learning environments.
4. Be accountable to the Undergraduate Education Manager to identify, devise, develop and implement new clinical skills training initiatives and educational pathways, ensuring practice is evidence based and adheres to trust standards and policies.
5. With team establish competency standards to ensure the agreed standard of care is maintained.
6. Supervise the professional work of preceptees and learners requiring training in designated areas reporting any concerns to clinical managers and PG & UG Education.
7. Advise and support staff and learners in relation to clinical skills training. Direct and supervise key supervisors and assessors to facilitate nursing learners to learn and develop and assess their competency.
8. Be accountable for evaluating clinical skills training provision, identifying skills gaps and take action to address these to ensure continued improvements, standardisation of training, including the standardisation of link assessors and quality of clinical skills training provision in designated learning environments.
9. Consider opportunities for income generation and budget savings in relation to clinical skills training provision and offer ideas in this regard to senior colleagues.
10. Take reasonable care of own health and safety as per trust policy.
11. Work with Clinical Skills Training Manager and subject matter experts to provide guidance and support to clinical managers in procuring clinical skills equipment and ensuring the best use of resources.
12. Under the guidance of the Clinical Skills Training Manager assist on the trial of relevant clinical skills equipment, its evaluation, reporting and procurement.
13. Report all accidents, incidents and near misses in relation to own sphere of work and/or defects in equipment as per trust policies and communicate as required with departmental managers and senior clinical skills training team colleagues.
14. Using a sound knowledge of the preregistration curriculum and documentation promote consistency in supervision and assessment, including the documentation of student performance.
15. Employ a range of strategies to help supervisors and assessors welcome students including outlining the values and behaviours expected of them.
16. Maximise student, supervisor and assessor learning opportunities.
17. Encourage clinical staff to develop student learning, by recognising the learning needs and styles, and supporting them to provide safe, compassionate high-quality healthcare.
OTHER
- Be responsible for ensuring that personal corporate essential training requirements, as dictated by the trust, are met in a timely manner.
- Be responsible for booking an appointment and completing preparation work for annual PDR appraisal. Engage in the PDR process and take responsibility for drafting a summary of the discussion and objectives.
- Support the department, division and Trust and at times undertake other activities to ensure the smooth running of the Christie Institute for Cancer Education and the Trust.
