Job summary

The Integrated Procedures Unit (IPU) has an exciting opportunity for a motivated, conscientious, and caring Patient Flow Support to join our core team.

This role is for 37.5 hours per week, worked over 5 days. The IPU Patient Flow team covers the Unit from 07:30 to 16:30 Monday to Friday. IPU is closed on weekends and Bank Holidays, so this is a great opportunity to achieve an excellent work-life balance whilst joining a dynamic, fast-paced service.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of the patient flow assistant is the preparation of patients for procedures, transfer of patients to and from the IPU, and preparation of bed/trolley areas in order to facilitate patient flow in a prompt, professional and efficient manner.

It is essential that the patient flow assistant responds to requests for their services as quickly as possible in order to provide a positive patient experience and first-class service.

The Integrated Procedures Unit (IPU) is a nurse-led, fast-paced and dynamic service. The unit consists of a procedures unit, interventional radiology unit, ultrasound room, surgical dressings clinic, outpatients clinic, day of surgery admissions unit, an operating theatre and second stage recovery bays.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

DIRECT CARE

Clinical:

1. To welcome patients onto the Unit and escort to main IPU reception through the clinical area.

2. To answer queries promptly and courteously, taking appropriate actions according to the mode of enquiry or the information required.

3. To inform or refer enquiries or problems to the relevant qualified staff where appropriate.

4. When necessary initiate and assist with basic cardio-pulmonary resuscitation procedure.

5. At the delegation of the Registered Nurse transfer the patient/client from one care area to another, i.e. inpatient ward to IPU or other area.

6. Provide assistance in mobilising patients from stretchers, wheelchairs & toilets.

Clinical Support:

1. Appropriately monitor patients, informing relevant staff of progress and/or any difficulties/disabilities relating to mobility.

2. Prepare individual patients and the environment to ensure effective movement and/or handling procedures.

3. Chaperone the patient as required ensuring appropriate support.

4. Actively support and assist in alleviating distress and anxiety of patients or carers, consistent with their personal beliefs and preferences.

Environment Support:

1. Be responsible for self and others through identifying risks and undertaking work activities in a safe manner.

2. Maintain cleanliness in the work environment in line with Trust & local health and safety policies.

INDIRECT CARE:

Clinical Support:

1. Welcome and orientate patients, visitors and others to the department and ensure that all communications result in effective customer care.

2. Assist in stock rotation/assist Housekeeper to ensure clinical areas are appropriately stocked.

Professional:

1. Demonstrate respect for the individual patient, ensuring religious, cultural and social needs are considered at all times and acknowledge their individual rights. In all situations ensure consideration is made to the patients cultural background.

2. Recognise and report abusive behaviour to an appropriate member of staff. Document same.

3. Contribute to effective team working, by being fully involved, committed and participative to achieving full potential.

4. Develop personal awareness of others perceptions, acknowledging and changing behaviour in response to any constructive feedback.

5. Adhere to Trust Uniform Policy at all times.

6. Undertake all training required to perform duties effectively to the requirements of the post.

7. Attend all Mandatory training courses.

8. Maintain own professional portfolio in accordance with personal development plans and undertake The Christie Care Certificate.

Administration:

1. Assist in preparing patients notes, relevant charts, nursing documentation and identity bracelets prior to discharge.

2. Undertake clerical duties as directed by the Registered Nurse in relation to all verbal and written communications, ensuring messages and communications are passed to other team members, storage and retrieval of such information.

Environment Support:

1. Prepare and maintain patient treatment areas.

2. Assist in the transfer of materials and equipment as requested, including the maintenance of equipment as appropriate.

3. Contribute to the general tidiness and cleanliness of the clinical environment including the correct disposal of waste.
