Job summary

This Junior Surgical Fellow (JSF) post is suitable for candidates who are post F2 level or above and who are interested in pursuing a career in surgery, developing their clinical and surgical skills and gaining a unique experience in the surgical management of a wide range of malignancies in one of Europe's largest comprehensive cancer centres.They will gain exposure to inpatient and outpatient care; urgent/emergency care, peri-operative management, and be supported to gain a good grounding in basic and intermediate surgical skills and exposure to minimally invasive surgery and to complex surgery where desired.This is an exciting opportunity to work in a busy tertiary centre, with unlimited opportunities to learn about modern cancer management in the field of surgery, including state of the art techniques such as robotic surgery and cytoreductive surgery with heated intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).The surgical experience offered at the Christie will be invaluable when applying for higher grade training posts in any surgical sub-specialty.This post is designed to provide a parallel training experience. Although it is not formally recognised as a training post, it will deliver a similar experience, with the same training and learning opportunities and educational supervision offered to those in a CT 1/2 post. It is ideally suited to provide a bridge to core surgical and speciality training.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be able to rotate through all four surgical oncology specialties at the Christie (urology, plastics, colorectal and gynae oncology surgery), or depending on the post holders personal interest, assigned to a team for the whole contract periodThe JSF will be expected to play a role in clinical audit, governance, teaching and learning. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The post holder will be able to rotate through all four surgical oncology specialties at the Christie (urology, plastics, colorectal and gynae oncology surgery)

The JSF will be supported by a team of consultants, SAS doctors, specialty trainees, clinical fellows and specialist nurses and will be part of a cohesive group of junior clinical fellows and core trainees working across the hospital.

The post holder will be part of the wider surgical ward-based team which includes: a training rotational FY2 post and four Clinical Fellows in Surgical Oncology.

There is a 1 in 6 rota with a combination of 8:00-16:00 working day time, occasional long days 8:00-21:00 and daytime weekend cover 08:00- 21:00 with compensatory off days.

The JSF will be expected to participate in clinical audit, governance, teaching and learning. For interested individuals there are opportunities to be involved in the Christies significant research portfolio. All junior team members are encouraged to submit project/audit reports to local, regional, national, and international meetings.

The Christie runs a MRes and MCh programme, and individuals who are successful in acquiring this post may be able to undertake one of these post-graduate programmes.

The Christie ethos is underpinned by a commitment to teaching and mentoring, therefore the successful candidate will be expected to participate to the Trusts medical education programme.

This role will be responsible for:

a) Management of acute and chronically ill surgical patients and diagnostic testing

b) Assessment of surgical patients

c) Effective communication skills and counselling including skills in breaking bad news

d) Coordinating treatment and investigative procedures

e) Discharge planning

f) Prescribing and administering drugs

g) Undertake pre-operative, post-operative, and enhanced recovery care for patients.

h) Attendance in surgical clinics and in theatre

i) Participation in regular audit, MDT and ongoing departmental research

j) Attend emergencies and unforeseen circumstances where predictable with senior, junior colleagues and emergency team.

Duration and Monitoring of the Programme

This post is for 12 months. The post is available to commence in August 2025. The post is based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Wilmslow Road, Manchester M20 4BX.

Place of work:

The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide input to inpatient wards (28 beds), an Oncology Critical Care Unit, 5 operating theatres, and the Integrated Procedures Unit. They are mainly based on surgical ward and will be rotating with all 4 surgical oncology specialities, attending daily ward rounds and providing ward-based care.

There are opportunities to attend clinics, MDTs and theatre session with the attached surgical team, during their tenure.

Professional Registration

You must have full registration with the General Medical Council and have a Licence to

Practice.

On Call Commitment

There is a scope for 1:6 on-call rota commitment during day only.

Leave Entitlement

Junior surgical Fellows are entitled to 5 weeks and 2 days annual leave (27 days) per annum. There are also 8 public holidays each year pro rata if part time.

Essential Training

All doctors employed by the Christie are required to keep up to date with their essential

training to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for training and to promote safe

and effective practice within the organisation.

Education and Training

The JSF will have an allocated Educational Supervisor. Individual appraisal will be carried out in conjunction with the Educational Supervisor. They will have the opportunity to gain skills in communication, symptom control and the assessment and treatment of surgical emergencies. Mentorship opportunities and career guidance will also be available. The aim would be for the post holder to sufficiently improve their portfolios, enabling them to compete nationally for surgical speciality rotations.

There is a weekly teaching session for all junior doctors on a Tuesday lunchtime, which the JSF will be expected to attend on a regular basis. There is also a weekly feedback session with senior medical staff to discuss clinical issues. JSFs will be encouraged to attend various educational lectures, meetings and seminars.

There is an excellent medical library with good information technology facilities on site. In addition there are strong links with the Christie Postgraduate and Undergraduate Education (PG/UG Education) Centre / School of Oncology.

The JSF will be able to apply for study leave (including attendance at examinations) and funding for approved courses.

The post is ideal for applicants who have completed 2 years of general professional training and are interested in gaining additional experience before applying for surgical specialty training.

Clinical Governance

The candidate must be committed to maintaining a high quality of service to patients, regarding patient safety, by continual development of practise in the light of research, evidence and audit. The post holder will be required to be familiar with:

- Implementation of Trust Risk Management strategy and understand implications of same within area of work

- Compliance with Blood Transfusion policy to ensure a safe service is provided to patients

- Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. To undertake annual training upgrades in infection prevention and control.

The post holder will have annual appraisal and be responsible to the Clinical Lead Consultant Supervisor/mentor for Clinical Governance.

Appraisal and Revalidation

All doctors are required to participate in Appraisal and Revalidation, this is not only a

contractual obligation but is also a requirement of their registered body the GMC.

Appraisal is an opportunity to take stock of ones professional activities and career and must

be undertaken annually.

Revalidation is the process by which licensed doctors are required to demonstrate they meet

the required standards and are fit to practise. The Responsible Officer, will make a

revalidation recommendation to the GMC, usually once in a 5-year cycle. The doctor must

ensure that all the evidence required, as outlined in Good Medical Practice is organised and

sufficiently documented.
