Job description

Job responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The medical establishment provides 27 Consultant Radiologists, 6 Clinical Fellows and 5 Specialty Trainee doctors (ST2-5). The Radiology Service Manager is supported by two Directorate Operations Managers and one Governance Lead. There are 3 Modality Leads (CT, MRI, General Radiology/IR/US). A Secretarial & Clerical Team leader managers the A&C staff and there is one PACS Manager.

The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide senior input to the diagnostic imaging service, covering MRI, CT, Ultrasound, Plain Film, Interventional Radiology and Nuclear medicine reporting. The post-holder will provide expert input into the relevant MDTs across the tumour groups in the hospital.

Clinical

As a consultant radiologist at The Christie, the post holder will be an oncological radiologist with experience in all aspects of cancer imaging, expertise in body cross sectional image reporting (CT, MRI, US plus or minus PET CT), and chairing of cancer MDTs.

The department currently supports 23 disease related clinical Multidisciplinary Team Meetings (MDTMs). Each MDT has a lead consultant and the meetings are covered by rota of between three and five consultants. The post holder will be expected to contribute to at least 2 MDT meetings and to develop subspecialty interest in these disease areas. The MDT consultant rotas are reviewed annually to meet the MDT peer review requirements and provide an appropriate distribution of workload and case mix.

Supporting professional activities

The agreed job plan will include all of the consultants professional duties and commitments, to include agreed supporting professional activities (SPA). The Christie NHS Foundation Trust supports the identification of 2.5 SPA for full-time employees to include audit, CPD, teaching and research and commits to manage this in a high trust, low bureaucracy fashion. The exact timing and location of SPA, and flexibility around these, will be agreed with the Clinical Director and be included in the prospective job plan, subject to annual review and appraisal. It will be expected that output for the SPA will be accountable and productive with supporting evidence of outcomes.

On-call and Emergency duties

The post holder will be included on the on-call rota. This is currently 1:26. There is an on-call Specialist Trainee, so that consultants are not routinely required to attend the hospital, but are called in where necessary for simple intervention, review of complex CT and for MR of spinal cord compression.

Education and Training

The department plays an active role within the North West School of Radiology, in particular with regard to subspecialty training in Oncological Radiology. Medical student, SHO/FY2 and non-radiology registrar teaching is also supported.

The post holder will contribute to the professional supervision of trainee staff and will be expected to become engaged in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, as part of their SPA allocation. In addition, they will be expected to ensure that Junior Staff and medical students receive appropriate support and advice. The post holder will be expected to comply with College recommendations on Continuing Medical Education and GMC requirements for revalidation.

Radiology ST teaching is generally one hour per week per consultant (including small group tutorials and departmental interesting cases meetings), with the requirement to teach during general lists and to check CT scans and contrast studies.

Research and Audit

Research is encouraged and supported by an active Research and Development Committee and a Division of Research and Development. The appointee will be encouraged to develop research interests where appropriate and be expected to support colleagues engaged in research projects. The Trust has recently entered into a commitment with the University of Manchester to develop the Manchester Cancer Research Centre which will offer additional opportunities for future translational research.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

The Trust supports the requirements for CPD as laid down by the GMC and royal colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Job Planning

The job plan outlines the requirements of the post and may be altered by joint agreement with the Divisional Clinical Director and Service Manager and in response to service needs. Job Plans are prospectively agreed subject to an annual individual job plan review (May September). It is expected that the initial Job Plan discussion will take place within the first six months of employment at the Trust and then be aligned to the Trusts annual Job Planning review cycle.

The annual review will examine all aspects of the job plan (including any educational and supervision components) and will also include an assessment of professional development with defined goals for the future. For more information refer to the Terms and Conditions section of this Job Description and also the Trusts Job Planning Policy

Job Plan Timetable

The timetable below is indicative and will be confirmed on commencement in post.

It is the requirement of the Trust that all new consultant colleagues must have 0.25 SPAs within their job plan to support Trust appraisal and supervision requirements. This can either be as appraiser or a supervisor for medical staff or Advanced clinical Practitioners.

A typical week would consist of 10 Programmed Activities, typically 7.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) or pro rata. The DCC PAs would broadly comprise 6.5 fixed DCC PAs including 1 PA MDT commitment (variable by week according to rota). The MDT PA commitment covers the meeting time and preparation time.
