Job summary

The job is a full-time post without on-call. The job plan will include theatre, outpatient and cystoscopy sessions and participation in MDTs. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in clinical research and in the surgical educational activities at the Christie.

We are looking for a candidate with good general surgical experience with core skills in Urology, along with 4 years of full-time post-graduate training, at least 2 of which in a specialty training programme. The candidate should be someone who has evidence of teaching activity over the last 12 months and a desire to be involved in teaching. With previous senior fellow level experience.

This post is for 10 programmed activities per week assisting in delivery of a high-quality tertiary referral urological cancer service including:

  • Prostate cancer diagnostics and surgical management (robotic)
  • Testis cancer (retroperitoneal surgery)
  • Soft tissue sarcoma (robotic/open surgery)
  • Penile cancer and andrology (penile prosthesis)
  • Renal and Adrenal cancer (robotic/open surgery)
  • "Late Effects" service- surgical management of the complications of cancer, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, including Genito-Urinary reconstructive surgery

Main duties of the job

This post will provide an excellent opportunity for senior trainees and clinicians to gain experience in a large comprehensive cancer centre. The duties will revolve around support for the North-West penile cancer, complex retroperitoneal and pelvic cancer teams. In addition the post holder will assist our tertiary referral service for prostate diagnostics. The post holder will support the Consultant Urological Surgeons, work alongside other junior doctors and liaise closely with senior medical colleagues. The remainder of the appointee's professional time will be deployed on other clinical duties, administration, and teaching. The candidate will be expected to participate in research with a view to completing a national/international presentation +/- publication during the post.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This post is for 40 hours per week and it is designed for middle or senior career trainees who wish to gain experience in a large Comprehensive Cancer Centre. The successful applicant will gain experience in urological surgery and have opportunity to do research potentially leading to a further degree. However, we are flexible and can tailor the post to suit the individual. The post holder will support the Consultant Urological Surgeons, work alongside Junior Doctors and liaise closely with Senior Medical colleagues. The remainder of the appointees professional time will be deployed flexibly on other clinical duties, administration, research, clinical audit etc. Detailed elements of the job plan arrangements are to be agreed with the successful applicant when in post.

Role Purpose

The post holder will undertake a broad range of clinical duties in support of the Consultant Urologists. There is one specialty Doctor post and 1 clinical fellow post within department which also has 2 Specialist registrars which spend half time at The Christie and half time at their alternative hospital. There will be ample opportunities to gain valuable experience in Penile Cancer Surgery, Sexual Dysfunction, Robotic surgery, Retroperitoneal Surgery (Testis) and experience in Complex Pelvic Surgery dependent upon individual preferences and needs. They will work alongside junior doctors (in particular to meet some current unmet needs for delivery of a high quality service) and other specialties. The post holder should be familiar with day case urology in particular flexible cystoscopy.

The role will be responsible for:

Helping to delivering a high-quality Tertiary Referral Urological Cancer Service which can include penile cancer, complex pelvic and retroperitoneal cancers.

Research in chosen field

Rotating to Diagnostics Clinics e.g. flexible cystoscopy.

Outreach Clinics (travel may be required)

Being a part of the Team for level II/III Urological Cancer Surgery.

Potential On call service commitments as a middle grade as required in surgical oncology.

Pre-operative preparation and post operative care for patients.

Active participation in regular audit, SMDT and Research meetings.

The Christie Urology team work closely with other surgical specialties at The Christie as part of a tertiary referral Pelvic Surgery Team. This team comprises 9 colorectal, 4 gynecological and 4 oncoplastic surgeons specialising solely in complex abdomino-pelvic malignancy. They undertake ultra-high volume complex pelvic and exenterative surgery for a population of >5 million people. The urology team also works in an integrated multi-disciplinary manner with 9 clinical oncologists and 4 medical oncologists with 8 specialist uro-oncology nurses. It is one of the largest uro-oncology teams in the UK. The urology team are active in all aspects of research, being one of the UKs highest recruiters to UK clinical trials and coordinating joint oncology research clinics in urological cancer. The team are an integral part of one of 2 national centres of excellence in the UK for prostate cancer research (The FASTMAN team). They are the largest penile cancer service in Europe and participate in local, national, and international research, with a good track record.

The applicant is expected to participate in professional continuing medical education; study leave is provided for this purpose, and the appointee will be entitled to apply for a contribution to funding of this activity. Mandatory Training is essential during this post.
