Job summary

Are you passionate about all things culture, patient safety, encouraging and advocating colleagues to speak up?

This role requires strong partnership working at all levels within the organisation, to engage with staff groups across the organisation to test/determine the culture of organisation, identifying sub-cultures (positive and negative) with a view to encouraging and supporting cultural change in line with our Trust values.

Acting as an impartial and independent expert and professional resource for Trust colleagues on all aspects of practice relating to Freedom to Speak up. Identifying appropriate contacts and escalation routes as sources of support for anything that might be spoken up about.

Importantly to encourage the embedding of best practice in enabling and supporting Trust staff to raise concerns where they see evidence of risk, ongoing and unsafe practice.

Main duties of the job

As Freedom to Speak Up Guardian, the post holder with a focus on patient safety will engage with staff groups across the organisation using tools such as national/local surveys to test/determine culture of organisation, identifying sub-cultures (positive and negative). Raising awareness of cultural issues to support change.

Actively engage in supporting all cultural initiatives with research and education to enhance the Trust's capabilities in evaluating and improving culture ensuring patient safety is at the forefront.

The post holder will provide a focus on ensuring that colleagues feel able to speak up without fear of detriment to protect patient safety, identify and develop ways to improve barriers to speaking up, improve experience and promote learning and improvement.

This role will operate independently, impartially, and objectively, whilst working in partnership with individuals and groups throughout the organisation. The post holder will seek guidance and support from and, where appropriate and escalate matters as required including to bodies outside the organisation.

Working with key stakeholders and the executive team autonomously on the development and delivery of the Freedom to Speak Up Strategy and actively engage to ensure alignment with the Trust People and Culture Plan.

The post holder will, adhere with directives from the National Guardian Office, regularly support and contribute to the national and regional networks.

There is an expectation that the role-holder will work from home and spend time on the Withington site to engage with stakeholders, deliver interventions, and attend meetings. Travel to our satellite sites may be required on a minimal basis (Oldham, Salford, Macclesfield).

The Christie is one of Europe's leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide analysis of data and work with senior managers to provide a triangulated analysis with relevant statistical sources. Ensuring that information and data are handled appropriately, and personal and confidential data are protected.

Provide support to the organisation in the development of a FTSU vision, identifying gaps in speaking up provision and engaging key stakeholders to lead on the development of a FTSU annual plan.

Writing and providing analytical reports to present to the Trust Board and other Trust committees to provide analysis if FTSU data, themes, identified learning and recommendations.

Lead on the interpretation of national policy and provide guidance on changes in legislation, government guidelines and policy development.

Report quarterly all relevant data to the National Guardians Office (NGO). The postholder will also participate in the NGO activities and training and actively support Trust FTSU champions.

Meet regularly with the Trust CEO, Exec lead for FTSU and the Non-Executive Director with responsibility for FTSU to highlight areas of concern, feedback themes, share experience and outcomes.

Lead on the development and review of the FTSU policy.

Working in partnership with the communications team to develop and deliver.communication and engagement interventions aimed at:Promoting speaking up processes, sources of support, demonstrating the impact of speaking up and celebrate speaking up

The postholder will be highly visible, spending time with staff, providing advice and supporting and encouraging staff to speak up. Visibility will include attendance at induction, participate in educational programmes and other appropriate engagement events.

Assess and escalate concerns to the appropriate person and seek assurance they have been acted on.

Develop, train, support and co- ordinate a network of champions who will work to ensure FTSU is embedded within the organisation and associated cultural activity.
