Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, experienced, and dynamic professional to join the radiotherapy review team based at the Christie at Oldham Satellite Unit. At the Christie at Oldham, we deliver both radical and palliative radiotherapy on an outpatient basis and this post would work within the well-established review team. The post holder would be responsible for providing high quality and comprehensive day-to-day clinical care for patients receiving radiotherapy. This includes on treatment review, consenting patients for radiotherapy but also the assessment and management of patients with acute potentially unexpected presentations. Possessing skills of clinical assessment is therefore required. Ideally the postholder will have some prior oncology experience. A non-medical prescribing qualification would be advantageous or prior experience of issuing medication on PGD's where appropriate.

This post is for a fixed term to cover maternity leave and is full time. Although primarily this post is advertised as an 8a post, a band 7 development role, secondment/ fixed term post opportunity would be considered based on experience.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will work as part of the review team responsible for the clinical care of patients receiving radiotherapy. They will work flexibly as a team to ensure full clinical cover during service hours.

The role includes the review and assessment of patients in relation to toxicities of treatment but also unexpected acute illness with the formulation and implementation of a management plan which may include referral to acute services for further assessment. The post holder will be trained to consent patients for several radiotherapy treatments. They will be expected to be autonomous but, be aware of their limitations and access senior advice when required. They will provide leadership and participate in audit and other clinical governance activities. As a registered professional the post holder should have post registration experience, including some at a senior level (band 6 or above). Ideally individuals should have some oncology experience, possess excellent communication skills and be able to demonstrate working across multi professional boundaries. The post holder will be committed to their professional development and be able to work flexibility to meet service needs. Evidence based practice will be inherent in their practice.

  • Act as an expert resource in providing advice, education and support to ward/departmental areas, and the wider community, on the management of specific oncological diseases and their managemen
  • To support, educate and provide exceptional standards of care as an independent practitioner for all radiotherapy patients and their carers during treatment and beyond. Develop and continue to review evidence-based patient information specific to own area of expertis
  • Communicate effectively and sensitively with patients who have cancer and their families/carers by offering support, treatment, and side effects information.
  • Be an expert resource at out-patient clinics which are held at Christie at Oldham.

  • Work with the radiotherapy quality system and lead the production, review and auditing of relevant work instructions and standard operating procedures.
