Job summary

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated nurse who has an interest in developing a career in specialist cancer nursing working with patients with renal cancer.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will use professional and clinical skills, to act as a resource and support for patients with renal cancer. You will meet patients who are newly referred to the Trust, support them through treatment, ensure their holistic needs are assessed and appropriate signposting, referrals and support is provided. You will support and advise patients are they adapt to living with, and beyond cancer and provide care and support for patients approaching the end of their life.

You will be part of a welcoming and supportive team with opportunities for collaboration and working with our colleagues across the Greater Manchester Cancer Network. You will be fully supported offering regular supervision and training opportunities for professional development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Outline of Functions

  • To act as a key contact for Renal Cancer patients, carers and other professional
  • To provide advice, support and symptom management for patients, carers and other professionals
  • To be aware of change at national and local level and how it affects the service provide
  • To undertake clinical and organisational audit, promoting the importance and value of undertaking such initiatives through multi professional collaboration.
Clinical duties
  • To accept referrals and undertake a holistic assessment of patient needs, implement clinical practice and evaluate its effectiveness, referring appropriately to services in the acute and community setting.
  • In collaboration with Renal Cancer CNS colleagues, act as a point of contact for patients and their carers in the community- face-to-face and over the phone.
  • Attend Renal Cancer clinics at The Christie to meet patients and their carers to provide information about treatment. To be fully conversant with treatment protocols
  • Assessment of patients toxicities on anti-cancer treatments in nurse-led clinics (face-to-face and telephone).
  • To communicate effectively and support / counsel patients and carers prior to, during and after treatment.
  • Undertake IRMER training and develop skills in Echocardiogram ordering, as appropriate
  • Ensure accurate documentation of patient care in accordance with hospital policies and standards.
  • To attend MDT meetings and radiology meetings as appropriate and to contribute to discussions about individual patients. To attend other professional and clinical meetings as appropriate.
  • To be aware of current research protocols and liaise with the Renal Research Team as appropriate.
  • To act always in accordance with the NMC Code guiding documents.

Professional/Clinical Leadership.

  • To act as a role model and expert resource to patients, carers and colleagues.
  • Act as a specialist resource for the ward and outreach teams who provide care for patients with Renal Cancer.
  • Evaluate service delivery; identify areas for improvement and initiate change. Involve patients and the public in service development as appropriate.
  • Provide written evidence of service development and performance.
  • Initiate and support clinical developments and projects to promote excellence in patient care.
  • Receive clinical supervision and mentorship to facilitate reflective practice.
  • Attend and participate in the CNS Forum
  • Act as a role model presenting a professional image at all times.

Education and Development.

  • To participate in annual appraisal and accept personal responsibility for professional growth and development.
  • Ensure compliance with Trust essential training.
  • Contribute to educational programmes in collaboration with ANP and CNS colleagues e.g. ward teaching, dissemination of best practice through presentation at conferences.
  • Use relevant educational opportunities, including attending national and international conferences, to ensure provision of the highest standards of patient-care that is evidence based. Provide written and verbal feedback to colleagues.
  • Together with other professional colleagues develop information and resources for patients and their carers.

Research and Audit

  • To ensure that clinical practice is based on evidence and current best practice and to disseminate information to staff.
  • To identify opportunities for nursing research and to participate where appropriate in nursing and multi-disciplinary research, clinical audit and benchmarking, in order to improve effectiveness of patient care.
