Job summary

An excellent development opportunity has arisen for a Ward Hostess on the Acute Assessment Unit to assist the Nursing staff and Healthcare Assistants in all aspects of patient nutrition and hydration and infection control. We are a friendly and dynamic team who deliver a high standard of care to all of our patients. We are a busy emergency admission unit with a high turnover of patients requiring immediate care and attention which makes the unit a very exciting place to work.

Main duties of the job

Supporting staff with patient nutrition is an essential part of this role. The post will involve taking patient orders, delivering meals during meal service, provide patients with additional snacks/drinks available from the ward during the day, maintain high standards of cleanliness in the kitchen/day room environment and assist/complete food record charts and relevant documentation. You will also be required to assist in bed cleaning duties to support the ward in the infection control standards for our patients.

Job responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities at Ward Level:

  • To take patients menu choice and prepare their bed area in preparation for their meals.
  • To provide a pleasant and caring service maintaining a good customer relationship.
  • To liaise with the nursing staff over any individual patient dietary requirements or restrictions.
  • To serve patients with morning and afternoon drinks, including offering nutritional support drinks.
  • To work closely with the dietetic team and cascade information back to the clinical team.
  • To collect the dirty crockery/tray from the tray rack and to scrape and stack the dirty items into the appropriate baskets ready to be returned to the main kitchen.
  • To place the dirty cutlery/mugs into the ward dishwasher and turn on.
  • To communicate between the Ward and Catering department with any queries, complaints etc
  • To keep ward kitchen clean and tidy at all times.
  • To wash the patients crockery and tins from the service trolleys, using the industrial dishwashing machine.
  • To set up the clean trolleys with the crockery for the following meals as appropriate.
  • To set up the trolley with food items such as sandwiches.
  • To set up the ward baskets with the appropriate service equipment, sauces, serviettes, fruit etc.
  • Basic food preparation such as making sandwiches, cheese biscuits and setting up breakfast trays with fruit juices and butters.
  • General cleaning duties such as fridges, freezers, tables, floors, hand wash basins.
  • Removal of rubbish from the
  • Reporting of any faults in the equipment and fabric of the unit.
  • Look after the lounge area including replenishing the drinks counter and maintaining a clean supply of cups and spoons.
