You will demonstrate clinical leadership, team building, and great communication skills and act as a role model and create an environment that promotes excellence in theatre nursing & operating department practitioner (ODP) practice and empowers staff to develop high levels of clinical skills and autonomy.

Your leadership style will be critical as you positively facilitate, coach, drive and support all staff within your teams to understand and collectively deliver the agreed goals and targets of our services.

You will be able to demonstrate strong clinical credibility, be committed to the development of theatre staff and drive change within our services.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an experienced Anaesthetic & Recovery or Scrub Practitioner who is a clinical specialist in the field of peri-operative nursing/operating department practice to join the theatre management team. This is a key role within the Trust with responsibility for the management of a designated area of Theatre, in addition to maintaining clinical output.

As a Deputy Theatre Manager, you will be responsible for providing clinical management, advice, support and teaching to the highest possible standard to all relevant personnel within the theatre environment. You will have responsibility for the day-to-day operational management of staff and resources, taking a lead in a specific aspect of operational management in the Theatre setting.

Throughout the pandemic we have continued an elective surgical programme and are supporting the wider GM oncology surgery recovery plan. We provide pioneering surgical procedures using some of the most modern technologies such as robotic surgeries. The Christie is a constantly evolving and innovating with new research, procedures, and techniques. Our specialties covered are oncology related Colorectal, Laparoscopic, Urology, Gynaecology, Robotic Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Brachytherapy Theatre and Proton Beam Therapy.

Job description

Job responsibilities

We have 5 theatres in the main complex adjacent to an additional 2 private healthcare theatres, a brachytherapy theatre, and a theatre on our Integrated Procedure Unit. Our sterilisation and decontamination unit is also within the main theatre complex.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical / Operational

  • Liaise with the surgical ward managers to ensure that patients are prepared for Theatre in reasonable time and are received into the Theatre department adhering to the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist.
  • Assist in the safe handling, transfer and positioning of patients in all areas of the department; including complex cases and preparing and transporting portable monitoring equipment to assist with the transfer of patients to Oncology Critical Care Unit following surgery.
  • Provide skilled assistance when participating in scrub and circulating duties in the operating theatre.
  • Act as or support the Theatre Co-ordinator in the day-to-day operational floor management of the operating sessions to ensure through put of patients requiring surgery.
  • Liaise and communicate with other departments e.g., Haematology, Pathology, Microbiology, Blood Transfusion, Infection Control, Estates, Pharmacy, Radiology, Health & Safety, Sterile Services Unit etc.
  • Ensure communication within the area is constructive and affective and includes the multidisciplinary team and other wards and departments.
  • Act as an advocate for both patients and ODPS/nurses.
  • Ensure that all equipment is checked and is suitably cleaned prior to each patients operation.
  • Ensure all instrument trays and consumables are prepared and fit for use prior to each patients operation.
  • To ensure communication with patients and significant others is established, ensuring empathy and reassurance regarding assessment, care, and treatment.
  • To ensure that there are accurate and comprehensive nursing and Theatre records, in all formats, are maintained using appropriate documentation and Theatre Management System.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary clinical practice, explore new ideas and introduce positive evidence-based change in line with local and national initiatives e.g., NICE & AfPP guidelines.
  • To support the implementation of safe working practices as required by the Health & Safety at Work Act.
  • Implement written standards of care, policies, and protocols. Monitor and evaluate care practices through clinical audit that are key to improve service delivery.
  • Ensure that all patients are cared for in a clean and well-maintained clinical area, ensuring that all staff are aware that they are directly responsible for cleanliness standards and are aware how to escalate issues.
  • To review safe staffing levels and make recommendations to the Theatre Manager to ensure that service provision reflects the need of the patients and available resources. Ensure workload/dependency tool is used to evidence requirements.
  • To support the Theatre Manager in the Human Resource management of staff including appraisals, absences, annual leave management, induction & orientation, selection and recruitment and Personal Development Reviews.
  • In liaison with the Theatre Manager investigate accidents, incidents, and complaints, implementing corrective actions where necessary.
  • Deputise for the Theatre Manager when necessary.
  • Ensure that any Safeguarding issues are raised appropriately regarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • To be responsible for ensuring confidentiality and safekeeping of patient and Theatre records.
  • To facilitate the teaching and clinical assessment of all non-medical students in the clinical area in conjunction with the Practice Educator Facilitator. Participate in training needs analysis for scrub & circulating roles.
  • Participate in the budget management of the operating theatre ensuring there are sound controls in place.
  • To advise and support the Theatre Procurement Team in the maintenance of efficient stock controls whilst ensuring the effective and economic use of resources considering revenue implications.
