Job summary
A great opportunity has arisen to join the Hospital@Night team. We are seeking an experienced senior nurse to join the current team of Night Managers. This is a key role within in the Hospital, with responsibility for managing the site out of hours, and clinically supporting the ward teams. It is a varied and rewarding role, with responsibilities ranging from managing patient flow and staffing allocation, to being a clinical nurse providing patient care. You will need excellent communication skills and a talent for problem solving.
Main duties of the job
The Clinical Night Manager is responsible for the overall management of the hospital out of hours. They are responsible to the management of the emergency and elective admission process across the Trust - including safe and appropriate patient placement according to the Patient Flow Policy. They are also responsible for managing the available staffing resource to maintain a safe service across the site. They are a senior clinical nurse who provides practical support and advice to staff in all clinical areas.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership:

Leads and coordinates the activities of the hospital as the onsite Clinical Night Manager.
Leads effective multi-disciplinary meetings with regards to clinical workload, bed capacity and patient flow.
Has the authority and accountability to act, and to make decisions around staffing allocation to ensure safe levels of staffing and skills in the clinical areas takes an active role in the allocation of resources.
Understands the roles and responsibilities with the wider organisation and shows respect for the contributions and challenges of others.

Contribute to the development of existing and new Trust policies.
To identify, report and address poor performance issues
To contribute positively to the leadership of nursing within the Trust, acting as an effective role model.
Clinical:
Act as a clinical practitioner demonstrating knowledge, skills and expertise within own scope of evidenced based practice.
Undertake competency assessments related to clinical skills which are integral to the role, and actively maintain that competence through annual re-assessment and active application of said skills.
Support and assist clinical teams in providing clinical care to patients at the Trust. To contribute to clinical care during times of increased service pressure, utilising clinical skills to support patient safety and care delivery.
Undertake patient assessments and clinical interventions.
Have a working knowledge of and work within the infection prevention and control policies and guidelines. To assist the infection prevention and control team in the management of outbreaks out of hours, and to be a resource to clinical staff.
Monitor and review acutely unwell patients, providing clinical advice and signposting to other professionals and services.
Arrange/undertake appropriate tests and procedures and initiate treatment according to agreed protocols/guidelines.
To assist and liaise with the Critical Care Outreach team and other specialist teams.
Ensure any safeguarding issues are raised appropriately, and effectively lead decisions regarding Mental Capacity Act Assessment, Deprivation of Liberty and Best Interest decisions to protect vulnerable patients.
Assist with clinical audits as required.
Assist in providing conditions to meet the patients need for rest and sleep.
Operational Management responsibilities:
Leads and coordinates hospital activity out of hours, escalating issues through the internal escalation process invoking actions from the agreed trust policies and procedures as required.
Manage patient flow across the Trust out of hours; ensuring patients are transferred to the appropriate clinical setting and as described in the Patient Flow Policy.
To escalate issues to the Executive on-call as required
Participates in the trusts emergency response to fire, security alerts, cardiac arrests and other internal emergencies out of hours.
Ensure that service related risks and risk reporting procedures are adhered to.
Ensure that incidents and near misses that occur out of hours are reporting in a timely way via the Trusts incident reporting channels, and investigate any incidents related to their service.
Ensure that risks, incidents and operational challenges are communicated clearly with the relevant managers and senior nurses for the areas affected.
Fulfil responsibilities as defined in the trust major incident and business continuity policies.
Assess the risks associated with workloads of clinical areas, ensuring the effective deployment of Trust and Bank staff to meet safe staffing levels.
Maintain the Trusts electronic rostering system, ensuring that all staff redeployments are recorded appropriately, and that all staff absence is recorded and communicated to the responsible managers.
Maintain effective communication links with on-call managers
Where required, make staff aware of Trust policies and their application within their area.
Ensure that problems with the physical environment at the Trust are reported promptly, making use of the estates staff both in the hospital and on-call out of hours, and ensuring that unresolved issues are communicated to the relevant departments and department managers.
