Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Lung cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our team. The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is an international leader in cancer treatment and is the largest cancer treatment centre of its kind in Europe.

The post presents an opportunity to join an established Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist Team as a band 7. The post holder must be a qualified Registered Nurse (RN) and have 5 years relevant experience in an oncology/respiratory/palliative care background or equivalent. The post will be offered as permanent full time post after a probationary period of 12 months.

Excellent communication, organisational and prioritisation skills are essential.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work alongside the existing Lung Cancer CNS team. Their responsibilities will include;o Managing a case load of lung cancer patients and using your oncology assessment skills to optimise patient care acting as key workero In depth knowledge of lung cancer and willing to develop this furthero Ability to assess people living with lung cancer holistic needs and complete holistic needs assessmento Advanced communication skills and advocacy skillso Uphold professional standards expected of a qualified nurse always prioritising safety and patient careo Help facilitate patient support groupso Excellent decision-making skillso Excellent leadership skills to embrace change and service developmento Devise and lead on audit and research to aim at improving patient care, experience and outcomes and publish and present findingso Presentation skills and taking part in wider education involving oncology and lung cancer at local, national, and international level.o Attend relevant oncology conferences and education sessions to keep up to date with indepth knowledgeo Line managemento Innovation and development of services within the nurse teamo Ability to prioritise a complex workloado Support nurse led clinics by assessing patients on treatment either face to face or on the telephone, ordering relevant investigations within your scope of practice and prescribing supportive medications and treatment.

About us

The team consists of Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ANP/ACP's), Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS's) and a wider multi-disciplinary team with a shared goal to provide effective, timely and compassionate care for patients with lung cancer. We are also in the process of recruiting a cancer care co-ordinator to support with administrative tasks and patient care support.

Outline of Functions

To act as a key contact for lung cancer patients, carers and other professionals

To provide advice, support and symptom management for patients, carers and other professionals.

To work as a member of the Lung Disease Group with responsibility for the development and review of protocols / guidelines which promote innovative clinical nursing practice and integration of patient care.

To be aware of change at national and local level and how it affects the service provided

To undertake clinical and organisational audit, promoting the importance and value of undertaking such initiatives through multi professional collaboration.

Clinical duties

1. Attend lung oncology clinics to meet patients and their relatives; providing information about treatment, being fully conversant with treatment protocols. Undertake a holistic assessment of patient needs referring appropriately to services in the acute and community setting. To communicate effectively and support / counsel patients and relatives prior to, during and after treatment, acting as a point of contact.

2. Clinical assessment of patients on anti-cancer treatments in planned nurse-led clinics as well as unplanned telephone contacts. Undertaking non-medical prescribing (within the limits of your competence) to manage treatment toxicity and symptoms.

3. Undertake IRMER training and develop skills in chest x-ray / image ordering as appropriate.

4. Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient care on the electronic patient record in accordance with hospital policies and NMC standards.

5. Act as a specialist contact for ward staff for inpatients, providing advice and support to the patient and family.

6. Attend MDT and radiology meetings as appropriate and contribute to discussions about individual patients. Attend other professional and clinical meetings as appropriate.

7. Have an awareness of current clinical trials and liaise with the lung Research Nurses regarding eligibility.

8. Act in accordance with the NMC Code and guiding documents.

1. Provide specialist, expert clinical knowledge to colleagues, patients and carers both within and outside the organisation.
