Job summary
This is a 10PA post designed primarily to support specialised oncologic plastic surgery and reconstruction at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust which is a tertiary referral centre for the treatment of cancer. This is a substantive post.
This is a post where the successful candidate is expected to have a key role in the development of the expanding breast surgery service, head and neck surgery and skin cancer service to support the Plastic Surgery department. The appointee will be expected to be involved in all areas of oncologic plastic surgery and microsurgical reconstruction, providing cover where necessary to the existing plastic surgeons and would be expected to share cover of the perineal reconstruction service.
Main duties of the job
Possession of the FRCS(Plast) and CCT, or an equivalent recognised accreditation in Plastic Surgery is essential, and interest in research and teaching is desirable. Candidates will have undergone recognised specialist training and have experience in plastic surgery oncology including microvascular reconstruction and perineal reconstruction.
Development of the Breast Service
The development of this service will rely heavily in forging links with breast surgery colleagues in the other hospitals in the region. The successful candidate may be expected to attend the Family History Clinics at the Nightingale Unit at South Manchester. The Christie is positioned to be one of the major breast reconstructive Units in the Northwest region.
Support of skin services
This service at the Christie has a well-established multidisciplinary approach to the management of patients with skin cancer. This includes surgery, medical oncology and clinical oncology; enabling the delivery of the highest quality of care to patients. Parallel clinics with oncologists for discussion of complex skin tumours and nurse led support are provided.
The appointee will join a team of 3 Consultant Plastic Surgeons and will work in the surgical directorate with 21 Consultant Surgeons within the Specialities of Gynaecology, Colorectal and Urology.
About us
The Christie is one of Europe's leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country. We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
The fundamental approach to treatment at the Christie is as part of a multidisciplinary team within tumour and disease groups. Close collaboration exists with the Departments of Medical Oncology and Clinical Oncology. In addition, clinical groups include endocrinology, paediatric and adolescent oncology, chronic pain, palliative care, genetics and psychological medicine.
The Christie has both diagnostic and interventional radiological services including ultrasound, radionuclide, CT, MR and PET scanning. Pathology services include histopathology, cytology, haematology and clinical chemistry.

The Anesthetic service is provided by the Department of Anesthesia at the Christie by the Clinical Director Dr Pawel Arkuszynski supported via a SLA for anesthesia with The University Hospital South Manchester. There are regular plastic surgery clinical meetings, a regular audit programme and a teaching and education programme that the appointee would be actively involved in.
