Job summary

The Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Manager will manage a specific Macmillan Information & Support Service (MCISS) on a day to day basis providing information and support to those affected by cancer. Additional to this contribute to The Christie's strategy on cancer information services and works in collaboration with the Patient Information Manager and with other information services personnel at all Christie sites. Work alongside host site and community services to ensure supportive and continuous care for patients and their families. Supervise and support on site Cancer care co-ordinators and the HNA / Frailty service.

The post holder must contribute to the efficient running of the service and work within The Christie NHS Foundation Trust policies and Health & Safety legislation.

Main duties of the job

Managerial Skills

To identify new initiatives to enhance service provision, ensuring standards are maintained and improved.

To participate in research, audit and service evaluation

To maintain close working relationships with local cancer centres, support groups and other support agencies.

Knowledge, training and experience

To identify own professional educational and training needs to include attendance on relevant study days.

To assist with the development of related educational programmes for staff and specific groups, as requested.

The Christie is one of Europe's leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. The Christie at Oldham opened in 2010 and is one of three satellites delivering radiotherapy across the network. The Macmillan information and Support centre is fully integrated within the radiotherapy department offering support for patients and their families. The centre has strong community links and provides a HNA service for all its patients.

MANAGERIAL

  • To manage, supervise and develop staff and volunteers working in the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre (MCISC) ensuring adherence to the Macmillan Quality Standards of good practice outlined by Macmillan Cancer Supports Quality in Information and Support Services (MQUISS).
  • To ensure the information used in the Cancer Information Centre is up-to-date, relevant and consistent with current best practice in cancer care and treatment.
  • To co-ordinate, supervise and manage all supplementary services in operation from the MCISC
  • To identify new initiatives to enhance service provision, ensuring standards are maintained and improved.
  • To maintain effective communication networks, working relationships and attend meetings with other Macmillan and healthcare professionals to ensure that the services provided in the MCISC are integrated with and complementary to those of the Trust and other MCISCs nationally.
  • To participate in research, audit and service evaluation
  • To maintain close working relationships with local cancer centres, support groups and other support agencies.
  • To actively promote the MCISC and encourage referrals.
