Apprentice Multi Skilled Maintenance Technician

Job summary

The Estates Hard FM department has an exciting opportunity to employ an Electrical Maintenance Apprentice. Starting in September 2023, the successful candidate will attend Salford College where you will undertake an apprenticeship in Electrical Maintenance. Upon completion of the apprenticeship you will take up the role of Multi-skilled Technician.

Throughout your apprenticeship you will work with a team of multi-skilled technicians responsible for the electrical, mechanical and domestic water services at the Trust. You will undertake work on the electrical infrastructure ranging from final circuits such as lighting and power, to complex circuits that have more than one source of supply such as standby generators and battery backup systems. You will be trained in the use of building management software, where you will operate the software and work on the key components of the system such as motorised valves and sensors.

Main duties of the job

The post holder's duties will be phased in line with assessment based on skills, knowledge, experience and competence gained throughout the duration of the apprenticeship

Over the duration of the apprenticeship, the successful candidate will be trained to become competent in the below list of duties. The initial level of expertise will be accepted as one of a novice recruit and a development plan will be agreed in order to measure progress

Whilst your role will be electrically biased, in order for you to take up the role of a multi-skilled technician, you will also be trained in the operation and maintenance of large heating and ventilation systems, carrying out servicing of air handling units and working on plate heat exchangers.

You will be able to trace schematics and wiring diagrams in order to trace systems throughout their entirety.

You will also be involved in electrical refurbishments, installing, testing and commissioning distribution and final circuits.

The purpose of this role is to train towards becoming a multi-skilled technician, being able to complete tasks across a range of disciplines within a maintenance environment.

The post holder will be required to undertake an Installation/Maintenance Electrician apprenticeship for which time will be given to attend the course.

Following completion of the apprenticeship the post holder will have the skills and knowledge required to maintain both electrical and mechanical systems.

The post holders duties will be phased in line with assessment based on skills, knowledge, experience and competence gained throughout the duration of the apprenticeship.

  1. Planned preventative maintenance

Work to agreed standard operating procedures whilst undertaking planned preventative maintenance on electrical, mechanical and hydraulic systems to ensure compliance with relevant standards and regulations

  4. nurse call systems
  5. passenger lifts
  6. ventilation systems
  7. hot and cold domestic water systems
  8. heating systems

2.Reactive maintenance

Interrogates, identifies and rectifies faults on a range of electrical and mechanical systems, ensuring work is carried out to a high standard and in a safe manner.

The post holder will be required to work on a range of plant and equipment such as

    1. plate heat exchangers
    2. heating calorifiers
    3. three phase and single phase pumps and motors
    4. air handling units
    5. process water systems
    6. macerators
    7. pneumatic tube systems
    8. external street lighting
    9. medical gas systems

3.Installation of electrical, mechanical and hydraulic systems

The post holder will, where required make modifications to existing systems, ensuring the work is undertaken to a high standard in line with relevant standards and regulations.

The post holder will install, test and commission systems to an agreed design, ensuring relevant test and commissioning documents are completed.

4.Use of building management system

The post holder will be required to operate building management systems, being able to make changes to set points, understand and rectify active alarms states to ensure that all monitored systems are working within agreed specifications.

5.Use of technical manuals and drawings

The post holder will be required to use building O&Ms and manufactures literature to ensure systems are maintained in line with relevant standards and regulations.

The post holder will be able to read and understand technical drawing to identify and rectify system faults.

6.Use of information technology

The post holder will be required to use information technology during their duties

  1. producing reports for operations and maintenance supervisors
  2. locating technical literature where required
  3. communicating with management and customers
  4. use of mobile device for facilities management software

7.Use of hand and power tools

The post holder will be required to use hand and power tools throughout the course of their duties.

The post holder will be able to use these tools safely and in accordance with standard operating procedures, risk assessments and manufacturers literature.

8.Access equipment

To ensure that work is carried out safely the post holder will be required to use and operate a range of access equipment in line with training, standard operating procedures and manufactures literature

    1. step ladders
    2. work platforms
    3. mobile elevated work platforms
    4. mobile tower scaffold

9.Competent person

Throughout the role and in preparation for the role of multi-skilled maintenance technician, the post holder will be required to gain the qualification of competent person for various disciplines such as medical gases, low voltage electrical systems and water systems in line with Health Technical Memorandums

10.Record keeping

The post holder will be required to maintain records of work completed, ensuring that documentation is completed in a tidy and timely manner. Completed documentation, where required will be returned to the supervisors to ensure that it is readily available for future use.

11.Communication

The post holder will be required to utilise a varying degree of communication methods suitable for the situation.

    1. clear verbal communication will be required amongst staff, patients and colleagues. Being able to demonstrate an understanding of verbal communication ensures that work instructions can be carried out safely
    2. electronic communication. The post holder will be required to manage email communication in line with Trust policies and procedures.
