Job summary

The is an exciting opportunity for a newly qualified or experience Advanced Clinical Practice to combine working within a speciality as a key member of the clinical team and providing acute care to patients in the oncology treatment centre (Oak Road Treatment Centre - ORTC) at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. The postholder will spend much of their time, working within a defined speciality, in the outpatient setting will spend time working on ORTC providing medical cover to ensure to safe and timely delivery of treatments, and supporting the nursing team to care for acutely unwell patients presenting on the unit.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated and driven to improve patient care and experience and will have significant nursing experience within the medical and/or oncology setting. They will have a Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice, enabling them to work autonomously in the planning and delivery of care for this complex group of patients.

The successful candidates will need to have a high level of experience in acute care and/or oncology nursing at band 6 or above and have a sound clinical knowledge, whilst also demonstrating managerial and leadership abilities. The postholder will work predominantly during core working hours Mon-Fri but there is the possibility of weekend/Bank Holiday working in the future

Main duties of the job

Provide clinical assessment and support to the care and treatment of a diverse caseload of patients requiring oncology input.

Demonstrate a highly specialist knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and management of patients with cancer

Provide medical support to the chemotherapy unit (Oak Road Treatment Centre) at The Christie Foundation Trust.

Request investigations, make appropriate referrals and maintain relevant clinical records.

Non-medical prescribing is fundamental in supporting this role.

Provide clinical expertise for developing and enhancing the service.

Work alongside the medical and nursing teams, maintaining good communication and collaboration between the various multidisciplinary teams.

To be a highly visible and approachable role model, ensuring that best practice is disseminated throughout the clinical areas.

Demonstrate a high commitment to leadership, management, education and research.

Job responsibilities

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITES

  • Plan and manage own workload and the workload of the service, in a flexible manner, ensuring that service provision meets the need of the patients.

  • To participate in the direct clinical management of patients from first presentation at the hospital, until discharge or death. Includes taking a systematic physical examination, and requisition of appropriate clinical investigations. Formulation of clinical management plans and re-evaluation of implemented treatment plans as appropriate.

  • Maintain and develop expertise and competence within field of oncology in order to enable collaboration with senior colleagues and medical staff, and to facilitate the management of patients.

  • To consent patients for treatments and procedures as per hospital policy.

  • Prescribe drugs, including first and subsequent cycles of chemotherapy (as per Medicine Practice Operational Policy July 2010), unlicensed medication and drugs used within clinical trials as qualified Independent Nurse Practitioner.

  • Prescribe blood products as hospital policy.

  • Perform clinical assessments and request relevant investigations for patients attending for treatment and review. Interpret results and take action

  • Ensure interventions are undertaken in line with best practise guidance.

  • Accept and make appropriate referrals from/to other professionals Check and interpret referrals and take action as clinical indicated.

  • Contribute to the coordination and effective management of the admission and discharge process as appropriate for disease group with reference to Bed Management Policy.

  • Perform clinical procedures safely according to defined protocols.

  • Communicate highly complex sensitive or contentious information to patients and carers. This may include diagnosis, results of scans or other investigations management options and details of prognosis and impending death.

  • Educate patients and their carers on issues surrounding health promotion and illness prevention. Promote and facilitate changes of lifestyle where appropriate.

  • Develop patient specific information and ensure patients receive appropriate information, advice and support in relation to their illness and treatment. Refer to other professional as appropriate. Provide an environment that encourages patient centred involvement.

  • Ensure effective communication with patients, relatives and members of the multidisciplinary team. Work with team members on issues relating to patients management and advocacy.

  • Prepare accurate and concise records and reports both verbal and written. Communicate with the patients referring s specialist, GP and other community and hospice based services at regular intervals as appropriate.

  • Be an acute member of relevant Trust committees and group contributing to developing /implementing local/national strategy.

  • Collaborate within Cancer Network and offer clinical support to colleagues within your cancer units, relating to individual patient management, health care delivery, peer review and strategic policy initiatives. Asist in the development of integrated patient pathways (e.g. NICE guidance on Cancer Services , NHS Guidance etc.)

  • Practice evidence based health care and be responsible for developing, monitoring and updating clinical policies in relation to own area of practice.

  • Act as an expert resource and provide advice and support to wards/departmental areas and the wider community.
  • Continually review and evaluate own role and clinical practice informing the annual review process.

  • Contribute to the clinical governance process, including adverse incident reporting/investigation and the management of complaints, as appropriate.
