Job summary

These exciting new posts combine working within a speciality as a key member of the clinical team and providing acute care to patients in the oncology treatment centre at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. The postholders will spend much of their time, working within a defined speciality, in the outpatient setting and participating in Ward Rounds, and will spend up to 2 days/week working on ORTC providing medical cover to ensure to safe and timely delivery of treatments, and supporting the nursing team to care for acutely unwell patients presenting on the unit.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated and driven to improve patient care and experience and will have significant nursing experience within the medical and/or oncology setting. They will be supported to complete their Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice, enabling them to work autonomously in the planning and delivery of care for this complex group of patients.

The candidates will need to have a high level of experience in acute care and/or oncology nursing at band 6 or above and have a sound clinical knowledge, whilst also demonstrating managerial and leadership abilities. The successful candidate will be supported to complete an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice with the support and guidance from medical colleagues and senior ACPs. The post holders will be expected to work over 5 days per week of which 15 hours will be dedicated to academic study and be able to commence in post September 2023.

Main duties of the job

o Provide clinical assessment and support to the care and treatment of a diverse caseload of patients requiring oncology input.o Demonstrate a highly specialist knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and management of patients with HPB & NET/Lung/Renal malignancies.o Provide medical support to the chemotherapy unit (Oak Road Treatment Centre) at The Christie Foundation Trust.o Request investigations, make appropriate referrals and maintain relevant clinical records.o Non-medical prescribing is fundamental in supporting this role.o Provide clinical expertise for developing and enhancing the service.o Work alongside the medical and nursing teams, maintaining good communication and collaboration between the various multidisciplinary teams.o To be a highly visible and approachable role model, ensuring that best practice is disseminated throughout the clinical areas.o Demonstrate a high commitment to leadership, management, education and research.

They will formulate clinical decisions and complex treatment plans to manage acute and chronic illness and will respond to actual and potential health problems appropriately. Non-Medical prescribing, strategic planning, education, research and audit are key components of the role.

The postholder will have a role in the clinical assessment of patients attending the hospital, working autonomously to assess the clinical situation, determining a working diagnosis, commencing initial treatment and appropriate supportive management. They will oversee the management of patients on outpatient treatment pathways and those attending for anti-systemic cancer therapy, identifying issues and altering treatment plans in line with consultant colleagues. They will order investigations, make appropriate/ timely referrals and maintain relevant clinical records. They will work alongside medical colleagues maintaining good communication and collaboration between the various multidisciplinary teams. Evidence based care will be inherent in their practice, ensuring that best practice is disseminated throughout the clinical areas.

Whilst a trainee the postholder will attend an academic programme of learning and is required to successfully complete all academic modules within an agreed period of time (flexibility will be shown as appropriate). Alongside the academic learning is a requirement to complete clinical practice hours as defined by the University. The trainee will be assigned a clinical mentor for the duration of the programme and the trainee will have regular progress meetings with the mentor and line manager to assess progress and proactively support the trainee to overcome challenges and barriers to successful completion of the programme.
