DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CLINICAL

1. To ensure the effective delivery of physiotherapy treatment to a specified patient population within the hospital, using advanced clinical reasoning skills to develop and provide individualised programmes of care.
2. To provide physiotherapy treatment to medical/clinical oncology & haematological patients on a clinical rotational basis. Duties will also include management of surgical and critical care patients as required for cross-cover and on-call/weekend working.
3. To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients.
4. To be responsible for the management of a designated patient caseload across Clinical/medical Oncology and the adult Haematological Unit (including those undergoing CAR-T therapy and haematological transplants), on a rotational basis, with input into designated clinics (as agreed with the supporting band 7 team lead) in the absence of senior staff.
5. To be responsible for the educational support and supervision of student physiotherapists.
6. To be responsible in educating, supporting and supervising junior and assistant/practitioner staff working within the same clinical team or area.
7. To be responsible for the line management of Junior/assistant/practitioner staff.
8. To provide specialist physiotherapy advice and input at Multidisciplinary Team meetings, clinics and case conferences.
9. To use advanced communication skills when providing and receiving all patient related information.
10. To assess patients for specialist equipment for manual handling, stabilisation and mobility purposes including standard orthotic provision
11. To be responsible for the safe and competent use of all physiotherapy equipment and ensure that junior staff, assistants, physiotherapy students, carers and other health care professionals attain competency prior to use.
12. To assist the physiotherapy provision and management in other areas of the hospital including outpatient and clinic settings during periods of staff absence.
13. To be an active member of the weekend and out of hours on-call service.
14. To supply and fit patients with suspected/actual Spinal Cord compression and/or spinal fractures with appropriate orthotic collars and standard spinal braces.
15. To provide appropriate levels of care to the patient in the management of orthotic devices provided, when patients or other care staff are unable to facilitate this themselves.
16. To provide appropriate education to patients, staff, family and carers in the competent management and safe use of orthotic devices provided.
17. To produce timely and informative reports, continuing health care assessments and discharge summaries for other agencies, e.g.GPs, consultants, social services and primary care colleagues to ensure effective and seamless pathways of care.

7. To disseminate knowledge of physiotherapy in an oncology setting by participating in the organisation of and presenting at courses, study days and conferences both locally and regionally.
8. To undertake the measurement and evaluation of clinical practice through the use of evidence-based practice projects and audits, and to initiate and implement changes to working practice and policies where this will result in improved performance/patient care across the organisation.
9. To participate in audit and research into specific areas of clinical practice for the benefit of the service.
10. To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance and risk management.
11. To provide a physiotherapy contribution into multidisciplinary service delivery and policy projects within the trust (e.g. implementation of NICE guidance documents)
12. To raise awareness of the role of the physiotherapist in oncology and palliative care.

ORGANISATIONAL

1. To be responsible for a designated area of work as agreed with the physiotherapy manager.
2. To prioritise workload, balancing patient related and professional demands and ensure that these remain in accordance with the department as a whole.
3. To be responsible for equipment used in carrying out physiotherapy duties.
4. To comply with the organisational and departmental policies and procedures and to be involved in reviewing and updating these as appropriate.
5. To participate in the Trusts mandatory training programme.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Physiotherapy Degree or equivalent
• State registration
• Clinical educators course

Desirable

• Additional training in communication
• Post graduate training in Oncology
• IT training e.g.ECDL or equivalent

Experience

Essential

• Post registration experience of working as a junior physiotherapist in a broad rotational post.
• Experience of involvement in emergency on-call rota including working with acutely unwell patients and patients on both NIV and invasive ventilation.
• Experience in the physiotherapy treatment of cancer patients
• Experience of the educational development of supporting staff/students

Desirable

• Experience in acute rehabilitation including neurorehabilitation
• Experience of physiotherapy service development.
• Experience in working with palliative and end of life patients
• Experience in the physiotherapy management of Haematology oncology.

Skills

Essential

• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Clinical reasoning skills to identify and treat the disabilities that patients may suffer from.
• Basic IT Skills
• Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team

Desirable

• Presentation skills.
• Enhanced communication skills.
• Previous involvement in clinical effectiveness and audit projects.

Knowledge

• Working knowledge of a broad range of respiratory, musculoskeletal and neurological conditions
• Knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiology of cancer and its treatment.
