Job summary
This role involves working within team delivering tertiary-level surgical care to Gynaecological cancer patients. It requires a dedicated individual interested in gynaecological cancer and who will be immersed in complex surgery and all this entails under direct Consultant supervision. Pivotal to the role would be good communication skills to discuss in detail diagnosis, complex surgical issues, and subsequent managements. Strong background in general gynaecology required to provide good understanding of patient journey prior to cancer diagnosis and support patient throughout. The fellow must work well in a team and across other surgical and non-surgical specialities at The Christie. Surgical training will be tailored according to the individual's ability.
Main duties of the job
Active participation in weekly Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings to triage patients accordingly for local or specialist surgery. Consultation of new and follow up patients in clinics supervised by Consultant and supported by Clinical Nurse Specialist will occur regularly. Identification and subsequent management of complex pre-operative issues will be encountered. Daily teaching ward rounds/ pre-operative assessments with fixed theatre sessions will be expected. Surgical training will be tailored according to the individual fellow's ability but wide range of surgical exposure available. There will be opportunity to provide emergency services which covers all the surgical specialities in the directorate (gynaecology, colorectal, urology & plastics), if the SAS doctor wishes.
Opportunity for peripheral clinics at different hospitals to maintain BSCCP accreditation and provide colposcopy service and oncology follow up clinics.
Research, audit and involvement in clinical governance within the role is encouraged and will bw accommodated within weekly timetable.
The role involves teaching and support to junior doctors, clinical fellows in gynaecology and other surgical specialities (colorectal, urology, plastics), medical students and Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Surgical First Assistants.

About us
The Gynaecological Oncology team involves 6 Consultants, 1 Sub-specialty Trainee and 2 Clinical Fellows. We are supported by team of 4 Clinical Nurse Specialist. We are friendly, hard-working team focused on delivering high quality patient-centred care. We encourage all members of team to engage in SMDT, clinics and inpatient care. We meet regularly to discuss governance and operational meetings. We are unique team as we focus on gynaecology cancers and support "complex pelvic" cases from other specialities, without distractions from general gynaecology and obstetrics colleagues as we are privileged to be based in dedicated Cancer Centre. We have good infra-structure for post-operative issues including post discharge and maintain good links with referral units. We partake in local, regional and national trials and encourage research and audit. As such, we are an accredited European Surgical Gynaecological Oncology Centre for Advanced Ovarian Cancer and are currently performing pilot series of HIPEC in ovarian cancer. We provide robotic surgery to majority of endometrial cancer cases, regardless of BMI as we are supported by an excellent Critical Care Unit.

The role consists of leading pre- and post-operative teaching ward rounds with junior doctors and Advanced Nurse Practitioners. There will be fixed theatre sessions with direct consultant supervision. Regular sessions for provision of clinics at The Christie and peripheral clinics for colposcopy will be part of role. Medical students will attend clinics and SAS will provide one-to-one teaching. Preparation and participation in weekly Specialist MDT will be expected and active role in Governance and Theatre Scheduling for surgical cases will be required.
