Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Clinical Network Services Division, delivering expert nursing care to Gynaecology Medical Oncology patients with advanced or relapsed disease. The Complex and Recurrent Gynaecology Oncology (CAReGO) service was developed in 2021 with the aim of streamlining and improving the clinical management and experience of patients with complex advanced gynaecological cancers, in particular, malignant bowel obstruction. The current team is led by a Medical Oncologist, and includes an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist and Clinical Coordinator. This hybrid Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) post will work within the busy and dynamic CAReGO team and wider Gynaecological disease group across both the inpatient, ambulatory care, and outpatient settings.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated and driven to improve patient care and experience, and will have significant nursing experience within the medical and oncology setting. The successful candidate will have completed formal ACP training and have achieved a Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice, enabling them to work autonomously in the planning and delivery of care for this complex group of patients.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work with the CAReGO and Gynaecology Medical Oncology (GMO) Group to provide expert inpatient and outpatient care for the GMO team patients on a rotational basis with our current Advanced Nurse Practitioner.

The ACP will work closely with the other members of the multidisciplinary team, such as inpatient junior doctor teams, Medical Oncology Registrar, nutritional and dietetics, Salford Royal IFU, discharge planning, therapy and social workers, to ensure holistic, seamless care for this complex patient group. Liaison with community GPs, district nursing teams and community palliative care is an essential part of this role, to offer expert advice and support care planning, and enable patients to avoid the need for admission to the Christie and can maintain independence for as long as possible in their preferred place of care. The post will comprise of 80% clinical, 20% non-clinical hours to allow for service development, audit and research and professional developmentopportunities within the four pillars of advanced clinical practice.

About us

This busy and dynamic team accept around 400 referrals per year. At any given time, we will have between 25-40 inpatients; around half of these will have malignant bowel obstruction (MBO) from ovarian cancer. The team work in collaboration with Salford Royal Foundation Trust to accelerate implementation of home total parenteral nutrition which enables earlier discharge than we have been able to provide previously. The novel specialist ACP-led outpatient service aims to deliver early recognition and management of symptoms, optimisation and coordination of care as an outpatient to reduce emergency admissions.

The Gynaecological Medical Oncology (GMO) team is very research active with programmes ranging between biomarker development through to phase III clinical trials. As the CAReGO unit is possibly the first dedicated team that has been developed to optimise management of malignant bowel obstruction it is envisaged that there will be significant potential for involvement in research projects and publications in the field; some of which have been started already.
