Job summary

The successful candidate will join a dynamic and cohesive team of 18 Consultant Radiologists within the Medical Imaging Department at Leighton Hospital which is part of the Diagnostic and Clinical Support Services Division.

The post holder will be expected to provide a general radiological service comprising CT, MRI, ultrasound and plain film reporting. A subspecialty interest would be welcome but is not essential. There is ample opportunity to develop a subspecialty interest, and this would be actively encouraged.

The department is supported by Specialist Trainees (ST) on rotation through Health Education England (NW), radiographers and sonographers, medical imaging assistants, secretaries and clerical staff.

The post holder will participate in a 1 in 16 on-call rota, which is partially supported by Specialist Trainees. A remote reporting service for CT operates independently from the on-call radiologist between 2000 - 0700 hrs during the week and from 1700 - 0700 hrs at the weekend.

The department uses Carestream PACS and has implemented home reporting to support remote reporting sessions and MDT preparation to increase the flexibility of agreed job plans.

The proposed AAC date is 23.09.2024

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to provide a general radiological service comprising of CT, MRI, ultrasound and plain film reporting. A subspecialty interest in intervention, however, would be actively encouraged and there is great scope for this.

The role of the advanced practitioner has been expanded with Radiographers and Sonographers independently reporting a wide range of examinations. The Breast Unit has advanced practitioners reporting screening mammography. One of the advanced practitioners is trained in stereotactic biopsies. The Breast Department has also recently started using Mag Seed technology and works in partnership with East Cheshire Hospital Trust to provide Breast Screening services.

On call is via Teleradiology from Consultants' homes and partially supported by trainees. Emergency CT between 2000 and 0700 during the week and between 1700 and 0700 at the weekends is outsourced and reported by an external provider.
