Job summary

The Cardiology Department at MCHFT is made up of an innovative and dynamic team who are keen in developing and expanding service provision. An exciting opportunity has now arisen for a Consultant Cardiologist to join the team and applications are invited from those who have an interest in cardiac imaging or heart failure.

The successful candidate will be based at Leighton Hospital, in the Cardiology Department, Division of Medicine and Emergency Care. Out-patient clinics may also take place at the Victoria Infirmary, Northwich.

Main duties of the job

The Cardiology Department is part of the Division of Medicine and Emergency Care and is responsible for the investigation and treatment of all forms of adult cardiac disorders. It supports the in-patient population, a large out-patient service, including a Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic, a Heart Failure Clinic, Atrial Fibrillation Clinic, Heart Valve Surveillance Clinic and Cardiac Rehabilitation.

MCHFT has an active Cardiac Imaging Department and offers 3D TOE and stress echo. There is an excellent relationship with the Radiology Department with in house CT coronary angiography and cardiac MRI performed jointly by Cardiology and Radiology Consultants.

The Cardiology service is Consultant led and is committed to delivering the highest possible standards of clinical care.

The Cardiology Department is currently staffed by seven Consultants, one Specialist Doctor, four middle grade equivalents (two Cardiology Specialty Trainees, one Acute Medicine Specialty Trainee and one Specialty Doctor -this vacant post), one IMT doctor, one GP trainee, one F2 doctor and one F1 doctor. The junior medical staff are shared between the seven Consultants and Specialist Doctor.

With the expansion of the Consultant numbers, we are also expanding the numbers of Advanced Practitioners and developing their roles.

Currently there are three Advanced Practitioners plus four Trainee Advanced Practitioners, four heart failure CNS and three Cardiac Rehab Nurses.

Job description

Job responsibilities

CLINICAL DUTIES

These posts are offered initially at 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week. This will include 8 PAs of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2 PAs of Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) per week.

The anticipated workload per consultant is 10 inpatients which varies depending on being Consultant of the Week. The 2 clinics per week have a standard template of 4 new and 4 follow up on each clinic. The clinic runs for 35 weeks per annum.

At MCHFT there is a rolling Consultant of the Day rota, with the Consultant being responsible for CCU and new cardiology admissions by undertaking a daily morning Consultant CCU and cardiology ward round. This cycle runs from a Saturday to the following Friday, with time off to compensate for time worked at the weekend, taken by individual agreement in job plans. Other clinical commitments are cancelled when consultants are covering CCU to allow the daily morning ward rounds to take place. There is currently no overnight on-call commitment with these posts.

When clinics take place off site thirty minutes travel time is allowed which is accommodated with a reduction in clinic size.

There is no requirement with these posts to manage general medical patients on the inpatient ward.

The post is offered at 10 PAs but under the terms of the 2003 Consultant Contract, candidates who wish to conduct private practice would be required to offer an additional programmed activity.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The post holders will be expected to:

  • Be actively involved in the leadership, management and decision making of the Cardiology Department
  • Be readily available during the working week so that medical and nursing staff can communicate and consult freely
  • Ensure that management plans are clearly displayed in the notes of patients with complex needs
  • Liaise closely with the Divisional and Service Managers, and the Associate Medical Director, to ensure that waiting list targets are achieved.
  • Share with Consultant colleagues the responsibility for providing clinical services for the local population
  • Foster relationships between staff within each organisation, and with the local Clinical Commissioning Groups
  • Work flexibly to achieve high quality care
  • Ensure targets for maintaining access to cardiology services are achieved.
  • Ensure the policies for communication with General Practitioners, Trust staff and patients are followed
  • Ensure that optimal use is made of all resources allocated to the post
  • Cover Consultant colleagues during periods of leave.
