Job summary

Following the significant investment in specialist palliative care within central Cheshire applications are invited for Specialist Doctor in Palliative Care to join the integrated specialist palliative care workforce. Working as part of an established and growing specialist palliative team to provide expert and compassionate care across Community, Hospice and Hospital you will be joining at an exciting time to develop and shape the specialist palliative care service within central Cheshire.

A total of 13 Specialist Doctor PAs are available and candidates are encouraged to express an interest on either a full time or part time basis. The PAs available are aligned to Community with the expectation that these new roles will work alongside the wider specialist palliative care workforce provider care to patients within the community setting supported by the existing Specialist Palliative Care Nursing Team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will manage a defined caseload and client group, providing highly specialised information to patients and staff, evaluating existing care and providing innovative and novel models of care.

The successful post holder will be required to complement the role and responsibilities of the existing Community Specialist Palliative Care Nursing Team and to provide a comprehensive range of advice and support to the population of Central Cheshire.

The successful applicants for these posts will be in an exciting position to enhance and facilitate the care of patients with life-limiting illness across the locality, to provide specialist advice and input in hospice, hospital and community settings and further development and research locally.

Provision of a 7-day Specialist Palliative Care service in all care settings is a strategic priority within Cheshire East & Cheshire West PLACE and the successful post-holders would be expected to participate in the medical on-call rota for palliative medicine for all healthcare settings across Central Cheshire.

The postholders have the opportunity to develop and maintain clinical excellence and competence in palliative medicine through professional standards and obligations, participation in clinical audit and quality improvement, research and engagement with continuing medical education by meeting CPD requirements and complying in particular with the GMC guidance on good medical practice.

  • Primary Medical Degree
  • Shall have completed a minimum of 12 years' medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of six years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years' experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted.
  • Shall meet the criteria set out in the Specialist grade generic capabilities framework.

  • Other postgraduate qualification e.g. MD, PhD
