Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 5 adult staff nurse post in The Emergency Department.

The Emergency Department has recently had a rebuild of our department increasing its capacity in majors and resus. The new modular building has increased our resus and paediatric capacity and as improved a better patient experience. The building includes a dedicated paediatric unit, specially decorated by a local artist, mental health assessment rooms and a bereavement suite, as well as the additional treatment rooms.

As an Emergency Department we are committed to provide high quality care within a demanding service by ensuring our nursing team are proactive and have additional clinical skills to provide individualised patient care for the whole range of presenting conditions. There are various opportunities to progress within the Department into band 6/7 senior nurse positions, minors training leading to Emergency Nurse Practitioner positions, Trainee ACP posts. Our Department has a Practice Based Educator providing numerous in-house training opportunities and ensuring our nurses are highly skilled to provide high standards of care to our patients.

Main duties of the job

Triage is staffed by 2 nurses who have a specific training and a health care assistant. The patients may be specifically for the Emergency Department or referred to a specialty but too unwell to go direct. It is the triage nurse's role to quickly and safely assess patients and decide the most appropriate place for the patient to be seen.

Resus is where critically unwell patients are cared for. It is staffed by 3 nurses although more nurses may be allocated here if required. It has 6 cubicles, one of which is specifically designed to accommodate paediatric patients.

Majors is a 16 bedded area, includes 3 additional trolley spaces and a sitting area. It is staffed by 5 nurses, 3 Healthcare assistants plus the Nurse in Charge and band 7 shift coordinator and a clerical co-ordinator.

Minor Injuriesis led by Emergency Nurse Practitioners (ENPs) with the assistance of an HCA. ENPs are qualified nurses that have completed further advanced training specialising in minor injuries, all of our ENPs have a vast array of experience within the emergency department. In minors the ENPs work as autonomous

Clinical Decisions Unit (CDU) Patients who are likely to go home but need further investigations or support prior to discharge will be transferred to CDU.

We also have an isolation area with 8 cubicles which all have their own shower and toilet to allow us to isolate potential infectious patients.
