Job summary

Applications are invited for the replacement post of Consultant Breast Surgeon based at Leighton Hospital, Crewe. This is a substantive post based on 10 Programmed Activities per week. The post holder will join the existing two full-time and one part time Breast Surgeon in running the Breast Symptomatic and Screening Service at Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT). There is no requirement to participate in the general surgery on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

The breast service serves a population of almost 400,000. It deals with 3,500 new referrals and 280-320 new cancers per year. One third of the new cases come through the screening programme. The symptomatic and screening services are fully integrated. Screening has merged with Macclesfield hospital and Screening MDT is held via teams.

There is a weekly Breast Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting on a Thursday afternoon, organised by the MDT Coordinator (Sally Boyd). There is good attendance by surgeons, pathologists and radiologists, clinical & medical oncology, Research Nurses and BCNs, starting with a joint screening MDT with Macclesfield, followed by the main MDT streamed via Microsoft teams.

The Breast Out-Patient Services are based in the Main Out-Patient Department at Leighton Hospital. Clinics are held every weekday. The service meets the 2 week national target for seeing new referrals and aims to see urgent referrals within 1 week. A one-stop service is provided, ensuring that patients receive imaging and any biopsies on the same day of attendance.

There is an excellent dedicated Breast Imaging Centre with Consultant Radiologists support. The Breast Screening Unit is a well-run unit with a high attendance rate, and screening is offered to an age-extended population. The Family History Clinic is run by Elaine Holden with links to Central Manchester for high-risk patients. There are CT, Breast MRI and Tomo scans on-site. Dexa's are performed at Northwich.

The Trust, which manages Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich, and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford, was established as an NHS Trust in April 1991 and became a Foundation Trust in April 2008.

We employ almost 5,000 members of staff, provide around 540 hospital beds, with a range of services including accident and emergency, maternity, outpatients, therapies, and children's health.

The Trust is also part of Central Cheshire Integrated Care Partnership (CCICP), a unique local health partnership that provides a range of community services for people across South Cheshire and Vale Royal.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, the Trust was recognised nationally for its 'Be Safe Be EquiPPEd' campaign, which aimed to make the Trust as safe as possible for staff and patients, through supporting the correct use of PPE.
