Associate Clinical Nurse Specialist – Spinal Surgery

Job summary
The postholder will work within the Spinal Service and will support the delivery of a high quality and safe service to all children and young people who require access to this service.
The post holder will initially undertake the role of Associate Clinical Nurse Specialist for the spinal service with the opportunity to progress to the role of Clinical Nurse Specialist on completion of specific service-related competencies and skills.
The successful candidate will provide specialist advice to patients, parents, nursing staff and other professionals within the Trust and primary care setting in relation to spinal services. They will also contribute to the development of the spinal service and patient pathways. The successful post-holder will work independently, under the supervision of the spinal nurse specialist, to assess/plan/implement programmes of care for patients.
Main duties of the job

Perform comprehensive assessment of patient nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs.

To supporting the delivery of pre-operative spinal clinicsincluding; ordering and monitoring or pre-operative investigations, co-ordination of admission pathways including education and support for children, young people and their families.

To work collaboratively with a large and specialist multi-disciplinary team.

To assist in daily ward rounds of post-operative patients, this will include clinical examination of the patient, care planning, ordering and reviewing of post-operative investigations and imaging.

To support all elements of discharge planning including prescribing of take home medication, safety netting advice and follow up care plan.

Provide support to the existing nurse specialist in the surveillance of existing spinal patients (over 70 a month). This will include both face to face and telephone clinics, the ordering and reviewing x-rays and the planning and co-ordination of patient follow
