Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity to recruit a full time PEM trained Consultant within Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust. Alder Hey is one of the busiest Paediatric Emergency Departments (ED) in the country, providing 24 hour facilities for the care of the acutely ill and injured children of Liverpool, and surrounding districts.
In 2012, Alder Hey became a Major Trauma Centrefor children in the North-West. The Major Trauma Centre receives trauma patients from parts of Lancashire, North Wales and the Isle of Man as well as Cheshire and Merseysideby both land and air ambulance.
Children presenting with primary care pathologies is a significant part of the workload. The Trust works closely with primary care and local commissioning groups to develop services that meet the needs of the children and their families. We are a member of the Cheshire and MerseysidePaediatric Network.
In 2023/2024, we saw in excess of 70,000 new attendances at Alder Hey ED.We have an admission rate of about 15%. There are a number of streaming options to support getting the patient seen by the right person included a co-located Urgent Treatment Centre. Medical (GP and ED) referrals are assessed in a Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) managed by the General Paediatric team.
We have an exciting opportunity with the development of a co-located Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) facility, minor injuries unit and a new PAU model supporting the patients, due for completion in 2025.

This post attracts 10 programmed activities per week.
The job plan for the first three months will be based on a provisional/indicative timetable. A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the Clinical Director within three months of the commencement date of the appointee.
The supporting professional activities (SPAs) allocation within the provisional job plan is an
illustrative guide only and will be finalised following individual agreement with successful candidate.
The basic template for new consultants is 2.5 SPA. Any additional SPA time in the Job Plan is linked to defined roles with clear objectives.

DCC Sessions will be worked across the week, including OOH and weekend cover. They are divided:
We work to an annualised rota that gives us maximum flexibility while ensuring safe clinical cover of the department. This rota includes all annual, study and professional leave as well as bank holidays built in. Therefore, all shifts dropped need to be picked up elsewhere, with at least 6 weeks notice. We are introducing self-rostering using Healthrota for Consultants with the aim to increase flexibility in shifts and improve working patterns.
New colleagues will work at 10PAS:
1 in 12 weekday (Monday Friday) on calls:
1600-2400 clinical shift then non-resident on call until 0800
1 in 6 weekends (Saturday and Sunday) comprising:
1 in 12 weekend days 0800-1700 or late shifts 1200-2000
1 in 12 weekend on calls 1600-2400 clinical shift then on call non-resident until 0800.
Additional weekday evening consultant cover is also provided up until 2000.
The job plan is subject to annual review with the Clinical Director, with any changes being agreed within the department.
Regular job planning meetings will be undertaken with the post holder to ensure that the appointee is remunerated for any additional activities undertaken and that the job plan accurately reflects the overall workload undertaken by the post holder.
