Job summary

We are hiring for 1 permanent post and 1 fixed term post (Maternity leave cover).

The post holder will be leading and managing a team of research nurses, Data managers and Assistant research practitioners,with the responsibility for delivering high quality research/clinical care. The post holder will also be expected to deputise for the Clinical Research Lead Nurse/Matron as required.

This role will be clinical, including leadership oversight on the clinical research facility (CRF), and managerial, and the post holder will be required to effectively manage his or her time to fulfil key responsibilities. These includereviewing trial protocols, identifying resource implications, actively participating in meetings, proposing action plans for poor recruiting trials, training, supporting and mentoring other members of staff, leading on service development and contributing to the research business plan, whilst autonomously managing a caseload of patients.

The post holder is responsible for the safe and effective management of the research nursing service

Lead and manage personnel providing opportunities for staff development, which meets the identified core needs of the ward through empowerment and progression planning.

Implement a robust system of performance management to ensure all staff undergo training and development to meet core skills.

Ensure patient flow is effective and timely through clinical research study set and management

Demonstrate through clinical practice the required role model for all staff grades.

Adhere to and facilitate Trust Risk Management Strategy at local level.

Maintain and monitor departmental budget through effective resource management systems with the support of the Lead Clinical Research Nurse/Matron.

Ensure self and staff adhere to Trust/Department professional development programmes.

Ensure staff participation in Trust events and follow up action plans to implement effective change management across the division.

Ensure staff participation in service developments.

Manage staff performance ensuring high clinical standards are maintained utilising review systems such as appraisal and professional development plans which reflect competencies.

Participate in the relevant Clinical Research Network meetings networking with other Research Units

Ensure the nurses are compliant with relevant Clinical Research Facility (CRF) Standards as outlined by the NIHR

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead clinical practice ensuring the delivery of a high standard of family centred care
  • Manage staff performance to ensure high clinical standards are maintained utilising review systems such as appraisal and professional development.
  • Ensure patients privacy is maintained and religious and cultural beliefs are respected at all times.
  • Promote and maintain a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients, staff and families.
  • Be responsible for ensuring quality care delivery within the CRF and by the clinical research nursing staff through the audit of nursing practice and implementation of evidence based clinical research.
  • Promote effective communication to ensure a cohesive and seamless approach to care.
  • Responsible for ensuring that performance data is recorded effectively in order to monitor and evaluate activity within the ward area.
  • Responsible for performance management and obtaining Key performance indicators within the clinical research nursing service.
  • Facilitate the partnership approach between patient, parents and all professionals involved in their care, to provide a positive patient experience.
  • To participate / undertake risk management assessments at local level and develop strategies to improve quality care, this would include clinical risks and RCA.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

  • Will ensure own professional and / or clinical training needs are identified and any core deficits addressed, within a 12 month time frame, meeting agreed learning action plan deadlines with the support of the Lead Clinical Research Nurse/Matron
  • Develop and facilitate educational and training programmes for the nursing team to ensure compliance with mandatory, statutory and specialist clinical skills.
  • Facilitate / lead nursing staff development through clinical and academic support.
  • Ensure nurse training is compliant with relevant Research Governance and CRF standards.

RESEARCH:

  • Lead / Promote and participate in the Trusts / National Benchmarking program thus improving quality and standards of care.
  • Support and facilitate Trust research projects through implementation of the research strategy within the Unit. .
  • Continually update own knowledge.
  • Actively promote and support Quality Audits at both local and Trust level in order to improve standards of care.
  • Participate and lead as appropriate CRF Patient Safety Scans.
