Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Neurology Occupational Therapist to join the Acute Neurosciences team at Alder Hey Childrens Hospital.

We are looking for a dynamic therapist with a passion for service development to drive forwards the development of the Neurosciences services, for children who are admitted with Acute Neurological conditions.

The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, experience of working with children with complex needs and of service development and audit.We would welcome applications from staff with suitable band 6 or band 7 experience who have appropriate post graduate training and level 7 study, or are willing to work complete level 7 study on commencement of the post.

Main duties of the job

To work within the acute neurosciences integrated therapy team, carrying a complex caseload across acute neurology, neuro-oncology and neurosurgery. Working in partnership with parents, carers, education and other service providers to ensure a child centred approach to therapy.

To act as the lead Occupational Therapist, demonstrating a high level of experience, knowledge and skill relating to the assessment and interventions of children with acute neurological, neuro-oncological and neurosurgical conditions and presentations. To provide a range of specialist individualised interventions, demonstrating highly specialist advanced clinical reasoning. Toformulate and deliver individual treatment plans. To provide highly specialist assessment and interventions in a range of settings including wards, outpatients, clinics, home and school.

To organise and manage a specialist caseload ofhighly complex patients as an autonomous practitioner in accordance with the RCOT code of conduct and HCPC standards.

To build on previous experience, enabling further development of clinical and managerial competencies, with responsibility for management and leadership of rotational staff and assistants within the team. To supervise and support junior staff within these specialities and support across the Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy service.

The post holder may be required to provide input to other areas of the service as required.

  • To plan and implement highly individualised therapy programmes to be carried out by the therapist, Assistant, Educational Staff and Carers. To continually monitor, evaluate and modify the programmes to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of intervention for children with changing needs.

  • Manages own caseload and is responsible for the delivery of therapeutic intervention within the defined areas of the service. To organise this caseload effectively and efficiently regarding clinical priorities, time management, and staffing levels.

  • To gain valid informed consent in accordance with trust policy and have the ability to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.

  • To provide highly specialist advice to colleagues working within other clinical areas.
