Job summary
The Alder Hey Clinical Ethics Committee (CEC) Co-Chair will lead this multidisciplinary steering group of senior clinical professionals and further develop the service.
- The CEC, will have joint Chairs; one internal and the other external to Alder Hey.
- The Chair of the CEC internal role is open to all clinical disciplines from applicants who are employed by Alder Hey NHS Foundation Trust.
- The appointee will have a higher qualification in Medical Ethics.
In future, there may be an opportunity to develop an accredited Paediatric Ethics Course which could be set up and delivered in modular form. The CEC Joint Chairs' input will be key to the success of this initiative.
Main duties of the job
- The Chairs will work collaboratively to develop the CEC and promote a wider understanding of ethics among Trust staff.
- They will support children, young people and their families facing ethical considerations both directly and indirectly: -
- They will support clinicians who wish to consider an ethical dilemma.
- They will ensure that the family has a verbal explanation and written literature about how discussing ethical aspects of care can support them when facing complex clinical issues in the delivery of care.
- The CEC referral form includes a non-clinical 'pen picture' of the child or young person, their personality and what is important to them.
- During the CEC meeting, they will ensure that the child, young person, and their families' views are heard in relation to their respective capacities to do so.
- Ethical deliberations will take place following the presentation and after the family have left with the referring clinician.
- The CEC's role is advisory and supportive. Families and clinicians will receive verbal feedback from the CEC Chair, as soon as possible after the conclusion of the CEC.
- The CEC Chairs will support the Chair of the CPSG and deputise when that person is away.
The CEC is scheduled to meet at monthly intervals. When there is no clinical case to discuss, the meeting will focus on developing educational aspects of the ethics service.
