Acute based Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Staff, all relevant members of the patient care teams, Divisional Management teams, external providers and commissioners of Paediatric healthcare, Local Authorities, voluntary and third sector organisations.
Main duties and Responsibilities
Principle Duties
- To provide a high level of professional leadership and operational management for the C Physiotherapy and Occupational Therpay Services at Alder Hey Childrens NHS Foundation Trust.
- To oversee the delivery of highly specialist acute based Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services to children and young people under the care of Alder Hey Childrens NHS Foundation Trust.
- To be accountable for the delivery of a high quality and safe clinical acute based Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services that are consistent with the professional standards required by the Health and Social Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- To develop innovative working practices which drive and support continuous improvement in acutebased Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services within the Trust.
- To drive and support the delivery of safe and sustainable efficiency saving within the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services.
Professional
- To maintain own area of clinical practice, providing expert assessment, intervention and advice as required.
- To define and manage performance standards for Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services in line with Trust priorities.
- To actively participate in Trust wide and Divisional working groups and committees to representPhysiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services and provide expert advice to support service delivery and improvements.
- To act as an advocate for Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services within the Trust and at regional and national levels.
- To contribute to the development and implementation of service improvement, ensuring that Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services strategy is aligned with Trust strategy and objectives.
- To ensure best practice is maintained within Physiotherapy and Occupational therapy, reflecting the principles of the regulatory body for community based Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services (HCPC) and clinical governance standards.
- To continuously review Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services service provision within Alderhey and the wider network, to agree service specifications and delivery models and contribute to or develop business cases to ensure service development and adequate funding of the service.
- To contribute to the strategic management of the organisation, representing the views of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy professions.
- To continuously review staffing and skill mix to ensure safe delivery of service within financial constraints.
- To be accountable for the development, review and implementation of evidence based Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services related clinical guidelines, procedures and protocols.
- To act as a source of expert advice on Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services for health professionals across the local health economy and ensure that such advice given by other members of the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services are theoretically sound and does not breach the code of conduct laid down by the HCPC.
- To ensure excellent user involvement, proactively seeking feedback and using this to inform future service delivery models.
Leadership
- To develop and manage staff through recruitment, appraisal, personal development reviews (PDR), competency frameworks for junior team members and continuous professional development (CPD) for all staff.
- To manage the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services to ensure that the clinical service provided is consistent with the clinical needs of children and young people and in line with funding streams for specific areas of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services.
- To understand the Trusts and Divisions key priorities and translate these into priorities for Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services.
- To demonstrate clinical leadership within Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services by demonstrating a high level of clinical practice and by providing clinical supervision as required.
- To demonstrate clinical leadership within Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services by engaging in relevant local, national and international work that promotes the role Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services in paediatric healthcare.
- To promote effective team working through regular communication with the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services both on an individual and group level.
- To manage the budgets for Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services and the relevant charitable funds within the service.
- To take responsibility or delegate appropriately to ensure that operational tasks such as payroll, sickness absence reporting and annual leave requests are completed in a timely and efficient way.
- To manage human resources targets within the team including sickness absence rates, working time directives and other relevant HR targets and outcomes.
- To be responsible for the Risk and Governance agenda within Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services including the completion of risk assessments, management of departmental risks in conjunction with the Divisional Management Teams, reporting and management of incidents and dealing with complaints in line with local and national guidance.
Audit, Research and Development
- To create an audit strategy within the department, ensuring the completion of departmental audits with the results disseminated and practice amended as indicated.
- Through annual PDR ensure that all physiotherapists and occupational therapists are engaged in clinical audit and encourage them to become research active.
- To contribute to relevant local, regional or national audit projects.
- To facilitate collaboration with the research teams within the Trust in the design, funding and implementation of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services related research proposals.
- To support research projects requiring Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy advice.
- To ensure all Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy research and audit projects are appropriately registered and funded.
- To ensure all possible steps are taken to ensure research and audit work is presented and published.
Education
- To work collaboratively with local higher education providers to promote the inclusion of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services in the syllabus for Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists in training.
- To delegate responsibility within the team to lead on the clinical placements for student Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists at the Trust.
- To work collaboratively with the Trust learning and development managers to outline the learning needs and educational funding requirements of the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services.
- To support the inclusion of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services in the curriculum for medicine, nursing and other healthcare professionals in training within the Trust.
Governance and risk management
- To ensure that all Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists are registered with the HCPC and that they adhere to the HCPC code of conduct and professional standards.
- To self-engage in continuous CPD to remain clinically, professionally and managerially up-to-date and competent with the HCPC standards of practice.
- To support the Trust Governance strategy through risk reporting and management and sharing of learning from incidents, risks and complaints.
- To encourage reporting of incidents and near misses within the team.
- To encourage learning from excellence, and sharing of best practice.
