Job responsibilities
- To search for and retrieve Medical Equipment within the Trust which may be due maintenance or repair.
- To interrogate device Event Logs with respect to retrieving Error/Failure codes and choose the appropriate action.
- To act independently, promptly, and efficiently in response to emergency and unpredictable situations.
- To accurately complete all documentation relating to requests for maintenance, equipment loans and return transactions.
- To input accurate and timely information on to the Trust medical equipment management system.
- To carry out any appropriate duties as determined by the needs of the service and as determined by the Medical Engineering Management.
- To provide first line technical support to users of the Equipment Library
- To Perform non-invasive, periodic verification, safety testing & minor repair of Low to Low/Medium risk devices such as, but not limited to; Sphygmomanometers, Thermometers, Suction devices, enteral feeding pumps and medical gas flowmeters as directed by Medical Engineering Management and where competence has been achieved.
- To ensure equipment is stored as per manufacturers instructions and in a condition which does not present a cross infection risk to patients and staff.
- There is a regular requirement to handle equipment that is subject to contamination by hazardous substances and bodily fluids, and to work in the vicinity of equipment whilst it is exposed to mains and high voltage electrical supplies.
- To exercise due care and diligence whilst handling such equipment as stated above and other potentially harmful equipment used in patient treatment, such as lasers, defibrillators, diathermies and radio frequency therapy equipment.
- To prioritise and work unsupervised to daily work schedules, maintaining professional standards in compliance with Department of Health guidelines and relevant standards set by statutory regulatory bodies, the relevant equipment manufacturer and departmental procedures.
- To carry out regular audits of Trust Equipment Library.
- To conduct regular Trust wide audits of the Medical Device inventory under the direction of the Medical Engineering Manager.
- To be aware of the cost implications involved in the servicing and repair of medical equipment.
- To attend training courses and to update ones own technical knowledge of specialist equipment and to update ones knowledge in respect of the specialised paediatric clinical use of such equipment. To disseminate this information to the relevant healthcare specialists as required.
- To provide support and cover when necessary for Administration team duties within the Medical Engineering department.
Communication
To display high personal standards in respect of selfdiscipline, hygiene and attitude to work, in view of both the complex nature of equipment on which they may be working and the requirement to liaise with other healthcare professionals, patients, carers, clients and external organisations.
To liaise with other Healthcare Professionals, Patients and other members of the public in a professional manner that promotes communication and a Quality Organisation.
To prioritise and negotiate with other healthcare professionals in obtaining access to medical equipment in order to perform routine maintenance and/or repairs at mutually convenient times.
To promote effective communication with stakeholders including professional staff, patients and carers.
To disseminate information to the relevant healthcare specialists as required. To train and supervise less experienced staff.
Analytical skills
To maintain an understanding of the application, purpose and location of a wide range of medical equipment: - including support, patient monitoring, IV Therapy, patient therapy.
Liaise with equipment library users on issues relating to the delivery of the service and provide feedback to the Technical Administrator Team Leader.
Planning and organising skills
Be responsible for the prompt delivery and collection of medical devices on loan to clinical areas.
Maintain accurate and timely equipment records and record data necessary for the effective operation of the loan equipment tracking and management systems.
To ensure service continuity by working flexible hours in order to provide cover during the absence of colleagues for which time off in lieu will be taken.
Physical skills
Required to frequently move medical devices around Trust, manually handling equipment from trolley to shelf.
Required to push a trolley for delivery and collection of medical equipment.
To carry out routine manual tests on medical devices.
Will be subject to repetitive lifting and handling of medical devices.
Responsibility for patient/client care
To exercise due care and diligence whilst handling such equipment as stated above and other potentially harmful equipment used in patient treatment, such as lasers, defibrillators, diathermies and radio frequency therapy equipment.
To continually monitor ones own work area and practices and suggest improvements procedures and practices.
