The Paediatric Dentistry Department at Alder Hey are expanding the team to include a Specialist Grade.
This is a up to full-time 10 PA Specialist Grade in Paediatric Dentistry appointment. Part time appointments will be considered. The post holder will work under the direction of the Consultants in Paediatric Dentistry and will undertake all aspects of paediatric dental care, including the assessment of children for extractions under general anaesthesia, the treatment of all children under 16-years of age and those referred for specialist paediatric dental care.
Main duties of the job
Clinical treatment of patients which includes care of the medically, physically and mentally compromised children and young people.
This will include:
- Assessment of children for dental treatment under general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic
- Paediatric dentoalveolar and soft tissue oral surgery under general or local anaesthetic
- Dental treatment for children who are in-patients.
- Treating anxious patients using inhalation sedation
The post will also include participation on the wards, and dental assessments of in-patients, providing paediatric dental advice and treatment for these children.
The postholder will be required to take part in all aspects of clinical governance activities in the Directorate and participate in appraisal and postgraduate educational activities.
About us
The Trust has a Paediatric Dental Department which encompasses the specialties of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Paediatric Dentistry. In addition, the department forms the main base for the Regional Cleft Palate Unit.
New patient referrals are seen through Consultation clinics. The department is responsible for both the routine dental care of children and also specialist paediatric dental services. A wide range of compromised patients are seen from those with special needs to those with medical and physical disabilities. There are facilities to provide dental treatment for these children under local anaesthetic with or without sedation, and under general anaesthetic.
In the past year there have been over 4100 attendances with 1100 being new patients.

It is envisaged that this post will attract 10 programmed activities per week (9 PA direct clinical care and 1 PA supporting professional activities). As per Trust Policy for new Specialist Grades increases beyond 1 SPA, in respect of defined roles with clear objectives, can be negotiated by mutual agreement following annual job planning reviews. Duties will include:
The delivery of a dental service in Paediatric Dentistry for the patients of Alder Hey Childrens Hospital.
- To undertake clinical procedures within the remit for Paediatric Dentistry
- To attend continuing education courses as appropriate
- To provide an exemplary ethical standard as a role model for dentists at all levels
- To take part in all aspects of Clinical Governance activities in the Directorate and participate in appraisal and postgraduate educational activities.
At present the on-call commitment is nil.
The job plan for the first three months will be based on a provisional/indicative timetable. A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the Clinical Director within three months of the commencement date of the appointee.
The supporting professional activities (SPAs) allocation within the provisional job plan is an illustrative guide only and will be finalised following individual agreement with successful candidate.
Once the incumbent has become settled within the post, there may be consideration for them to embark on post-CCST training. This would be optional and be discussed with Consultants within the department.
