Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with the initiative and drive to encompass change and develop nursing practice within the Critical Care environment and Critical Care Outreach Team.

This role will be a combined role working rotationally six months within the Critical care area and six months within the Outreach Team.

Within Critical Care a commitment to providing the highest quality patient care and teaching/mentoring of junior staff is essential. You must be an effective communicator with proven leadership skills and have a strong team work ethic. You will need to be able to demonstrate active involvement in improving the clinical standards of care.

Within Outreach the successful candidate will work with a Team of Outreach Nurses in providing 24 hour 7 days a week service. He or she will undertake comprehensive physical and psychological patient assessments resulting in a clear plan for acutely ill/deteriorating ward patients.

The successful candidate must be NMC registered and be able to demonstrate a mature and professional relationship with patients and clinical teams. They should exhibit excellent communication skills, team working at all levels, and a willingness to work flexibly.

To apply for the post the successful candidates must have a minimum of 4 years' experience within Critical Care, hold a post graduate certificate in Critical Care, be a current Band 6 or have undertaken a Band 6 development post.

Main duties of the job

You will assist in the educational support of MEWS in the clinical areas to deflect the need for critical care admission through close monitoring and early intervention. Together with the Resuscitation and Hospital at Night Teams your role will contribute to providing a Critical Care service to all patients who require this support outside of Critical Care on a 24/7 basis. The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to work independently and respond to the constant changes and demands in the clinical setting. You will be required to communicate effectively with a wide range of disciplines and have the ability to lead and support the nursing and medical teams in managing the acutely ill patient.

He/she will actively support senior colleagues and take charge of the Unit in the absence of a clinical Band 7 and will promote the role of Band 6 within critical care. The post holder will develop and maintain expert practitioner skills in the critical care environment in which excellence in clinical care flourishes. They will practice nursing within a clinical governance framework to create an environment in which excellence in clinical care flourishes.
