Job responsibilities
Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital provides a service in the speciality to Merseyside, North Wales, and Parts of Lancashire, Cheshire and the Isle of Man. This catchment area has a population of 2.8 million people.
The Cardiology department is the tertiary centre for the region. Services include coronary angiography, percutaneous coronary intervention (including primary angioplasty), cardiac electrophysiology, pacemaker and advanced device implantation, structural heart disease (including device closure and transcatheter aortic valve replacement) and advanced cardiac imaging. Other specialist clinics included adult congenital heart disease.
The Respiratory Department houses the Regional Cystic Fibrosis, Tuberculosis and interstitial lung disease services as well as running the largest Lung Cancer unit in the Network. Regional Endobronchial Ultrasound and Regional Bronchial stenting services take place here as well as General Medicine clinics. Other specialist clinics include Sleep medicine and Pleural disease.
There is a close relationship with both the Surgical and Intensive Care Departments. Postgraduate teaching is a regular feature in the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

There are 9 Consultant Chest Physicians and 21 Consultant Cardiologists, supported by 15 Specialist Registrars in Cardiology, 4 Specialist Registrars in Chest Medicine and 12 Senior House Officers.

DUTIES OF THE POST
Due to an unexpected gap in the medical rota the opportunity has arisen for a suitably trained doctor to undertake a placement at The Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. Although not educationally approved, this post would suit applicants wishing to further their career in medicine and gain further experience in the speciality.
All duties will be carried out within the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. As well as the resident care of patients in the medical wards, the postholder will have the opportunity to assist in both routine and emergency procedures. There will be duties in the Outpatients Department, principally for clinical instruction.
There are 4 IMT doctors, 4 Trust Doctors and 2 GPVTS posts within the specialties. The postholder will work alongside and at the same level as the other Tier 1 doctors who are linked to the Internal Medical Training Scheme. There is a modular training programme in place.
There is a tier 1 shift rota in place that includes both surgical and medical tier 1 doctors, with prospective cover which incorporates 10 doctors covering the Wards between 20.00hrs and 08.30hrs (night-time) one week in 20. He/she is covered by a resident Specialist Registrar. There is 1:10 evening cover (until 20.30hrs). Doctors participating in a rota cover the Coronary care unit, medical wards, day ward and out patients.
The hospital has a specialist library and there are also library facilities. The library facilities at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, the Liverpool Medical Institution and the University Cohen library are also available to the postholder.
Research opportunities are available at the hospital, but these depend very much on the attitude and interest of the successful candidate.
There is an active postgraduate medical education training programme within the hospital, which comprises tutorials, clinical conferences, audit meetings and journal clubs. It is mandatory for all CMT1&2s/Trust Doctors to attend a minimum of 70% of the formal teaching sessions. Other postgraduate medical education courses are also available in the locality.
ANNUAL LEAVE, STUDY LEAVE AND SICKNESS
Applications for both annual leave and study leave must be submitted at least six weeks prior to the intended absence. Not more than three Tier 1 Doctors should be on leave at any one time. Leave must not be taken when the postholder is covering the Coronary Care Unit.
All applications for leave must be initially approved by the administrative SpR & Supervising Consultant and all study leave is subject to the formal approval by the Postgraduate Clinical Tutor.
Staff unable to attend for duty due to sickness should telephone the Administrative Specialist Registrar between 8.00am and 9.00am on the first day of sickness.
