Job summary

This post is based at Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of the consultants who perform cross sectional MRI for patients with congenital heart disease.

Outpatient work will include a minimum of two weekly ACHD clinics and flexibility across sites for clinic may be required.

The successful candidate will be expected to become competent in ACHD MRI at the end of their post. We would expect a suitably trained appointee to perform and report at least 300 MRI cases by the end of their fellowship covering both congenital and acquired heart disease cases.

Main duties of the job

  • ACHD Outpatient clinics
  • MRI sessions with standalone reporting time
  • Ward Work: The fellow will not be expected to contribute to regular ward cover though in exceptions this may be needed
  • The expectation is that the appointed fellow will register for an MD/PhD at the University of Liverpool looking at areas of interest in congenital cardiac MR

A key feature of LHCH is its Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) Unit which delivers care to an even larger geographic area, the entire North West of England, North Wales and Isle of Man, - 8.6 million people to support, of whom 25,000 patients will have congenital heart disease through a comprehensive network. It is one of the largest ACHD units in the world.

The Liverpool Congenital Cardiac Service

The Liverpool Congenital Cardiac Service is the Level 1 Specialist Surgical Centre for the North West of England and North Wales. It provides specialised congenital heart services for a catchment of circa 8.6million people. The Liverpool Congenital Cardiac Service is a collaboration between four trusts in Liverpool comprising; Alder Hey NHS Foundation Trust, Liverpool Heart and Chest Foundation Trust, Liverpool Womens NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust. The four partner organisations provide an all age congenital cardiac service with a campus based model of care.

Alder Hey Childrens Hospital will provide Level 1 services for children with CHD. Level 1 services for adults with congenital heart disease will be provided jointly by Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. Specialised Obstetric Services are delivered jointly between Liverpool and Manchester University Hospitals Foundation Trust.

The Post

LHCH is a foundation trust, which has seen a great deal of development in the last few years. As a result of major capital investment the Centre is able to provide:

180 medical and surgical beds

26 day case beds

12 bed cystic fibrosis ward

10 CCU beds; 24 surgical ITU beds (potential to expand to 30)

8 dedicated cardiothoracic surgical operating theatres

Endoscopy suite

Recovery room

X-ray department with a multi-channel spiral CT scanner and MRI scanner

Pulmonary function and oesophageal laboratory

7 cardiac catheterisation laboratories

One shared pacing/aneurysm theatre

Research laboratories

Electronics workshop

Pulmonary function and oesophageal laboratory
