Job responsibilities
This is a two-year CF Trust Fellow post, subject to satisfactory review at one year, due to commence in August 2025 (start date negotiable) at the Liverpool Adult CF Unit at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH).
LHCH is a standalone NHS Trust which provides tertiary cardiac and thoracic services for North Wales, Merseyside and Cheshire, serving a catchment area of >3.5 million people. The Centre is a large adult clinic with over 400 pwCF (people living with CF) living across Merseyside, the Northwest of England, North Wales and Isle of Man.
Respiratory inpatient care is currently provided by the general respiratory junior medical team, consisting of 3 SpRs, a CF Fellow and 2 IMTs. The CF Fellow will be responsible for overseeing the inpatient care of individuals with CF and assisting the MDT in the care of CF outpatients.
Research is an important part of CF care, and the Unit has a national reputation in this respect, particularly related to microbiology, and infection, renal complications, diabetes and new imaging modalities. It has supported several MD / PhD theses since 2000. There are strong links with world-class infection research infrastructure at University of Liverpool and also the Liverpool Centre of Cardiovascular Science (LCCS).
The post will therefore best suit a trainee interested in CF who wishes to broaden their subspecialty and research experience with a view to attaining a consultant post in the specialty or those wishing to pursue a career in respiratory medicine and wishing to develop research skills.
Office accommodation and IT access will be provided.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
The Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital houses a fully equipped and staffed research laboratory and the successful candidate will be supported to use this. The Fellow will be expected to support ongoing research projects at LHCH but will be supported to develop their own interests and expertise. The Fellow will be expected to undertake a major research project with a view to attaining a higher degree. Alongside this, the successful candidate will be expected to:
- Attend and contribute to CF clinic
- Managing CF inpatients
- Support the CF MDT
- Attend the radiology MDT
ON CALL
There is an on-call commitment for respiratory medicine which is shared with other SpRs at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital and is envisaged to be on a 1:4 weekend rota basis. It attracts an appropriate banding payment commensurate with the level of experience of the Fellow.
EDUCATION
A regular programme of conferences, lectures and seminars takes place within LHCH. The centre is committed to the principal and practice of clinical audit in which all medical staff are expected to participate. The appointee will be expected to attend and take part in the various educational meetings. They will be expected to present cases, develop an audit interest and present the data locally.
A specialist library is available on site. In addition, the libraries of the Liverpool Medical Institution, Liverpool University and Broadgreen Hospital are also available for reference. There is also a purpose-built doctors mess, including office space, computing facilities and recreational facilities.
RECORD OF TRAINING
An educational supervisor will be assigned at the start of the fellowship and will provide close supervision to ensure training goals are obtained. As well as serving as a review and training, this will allow planning and flexibility within the post-holders programmes and will allow for career advice and development of specific interests accordingly.
ANNUAL LEAVE AND STUDY LEAVE
The post-holders will have full entitlement to annual and study leave. All leave arrangements are subject to approval by the supervising consultant.
