Job summary

Around 2,000 Open Heart Procedures and 700 Major Thoracic operations are carried out each year; thus there is a wide variety of Pulmonary,Cardiac and Thoracic Aortic work.

There is a close relationship with the Cardiology Department and with an active Respiratory Medical Unit.

Postgraduate teaching is a regular feature in the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

Main duties of the job

This post would suit applicants wishing to further their career in cardiothoracic surgery and gain further experience in the speciality, although it is not educationally approved. Successful applicants will be allocated time in theatre for surgical training as well as protected educational days to be spent in clinic, multidisciplinary team meetings, for audit and research as well as other educational activities.

All duties will be carried out within the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. As well as the resident care of patients in the Cardiothoracic Surgical Wards, the post-holder will have the opportunity to assist in both routine and emergency operations.

There are 3 ST1/2 posts available within the specialty plus 3 Trust Doctor posts. The postholder will work alongside and at the same level as the other ST1/2 level doctors, who are linked to the Core Surgical Training Scheme. There is a modular training programme in place.

The on call commitments include a 'Hospital at Night' cover which is a 1:18 full shift rota in place (in combination with similar grade doctors in cardiology), with prospective cover (band 1A) which incorporates one ST1/2/Trust Doctor covering the Wards between 20.00hrs and 08.30hrs (night-time) and 08.00 hrs and 20.30 hrs during weekends. The individual on call is covered by a resident Specialist Registrar in Cardiothoracic Surgery and a Specialist Registrar in Anaesthesia.

STUDY AND TRAINING

The hospital has a specialist library and there are also Knowledge and Education facilities. Research opportunities are available at the hospital, depending on the inclination and interest of the successful candidate.

There is an active postgraduate medical education training programme within the hospital, which comprises tutorials, clinical conferences, audit meetings and journal clubs. It is mandatory for all ST1&2s / Trust Doctors to attend a minimum of 70% of the formal teaching sessions.Other postgraduate medical education courses are also available in the locality.

ANNUAL LEAVE,STUDY LEAVEANDSICKNESS

Applications for both annual leave and study leave must be submitted at least six weeks prior to the intended absence. Not more than three ST1/2/Trust Doctors should be on leave at any one time. Leave must not be taken when the post-holder is covering the oncalls.

All applications for leave must be initially approved by the Administrative SpR & Supervising Consultant and all study leave is subject to the formal approval by the Postgraduate Clinical Tutor.
