Job summary

Medical Engineering at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital are looking to recruit an additional Band 5 Medical Engineering technician. This person will be working along side the existing team of 7 technicians. Maintaining, servicing and managing the Trusts medical Equipment.

Main duties of the job

Will be working within a team of multi-disciplined medical engineers. Maintaining and servicing a wide range of medical equipment; including life - support, patient monitoring, patient therapy, diagnostic, ventilator and anaesthetic equipment which can be in a clinical environment and/or 'patient connected'. Training for the will be via OEM's or in house.

Will at times be required to work in patient areas including, Theatres and Critical Care on equipment that may be connected to patients.

Will be required to unsupervised and take the initiative to ensure that equipment to be maintained is done so to within given levels and time constraints.

May be requested to participate in an on-call rota that provides 24 hrs / 7 day cover to the departments on site.

1. JOB SUMMARY

To act as a member of a highly skilled, multi-disciplined team of medical engineers. Duties include the maintenance of highly complex specialised medical equipment; including life - support, patient monitoring, patient therapy, diagnostic, ventilator and anaesthetic equipment and the repairs of the said equipment, which at times will be in a clinical environment and 'patient connected'.

To work unsupervised and take the initiative to ensure that equipment to be maintained is done so to within given levels and time constraints.

May be requested to participate in an on-call rota that provides 24 hrs / 7 day cover to the departments on site.

2. CLINICAL/PROFESIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

To ensure the technical safety of medical equipment, that it is within the prescribed specification as laid down in relevant statutory documents and manufacturers specifications. To keep up to date with current standards, mandatory regulations and guidelines relating to medical equipment used to deliver life support and therapy to patients, in order to hasten their recovery.

To work on equipment, which may be 'patient connected' in areas including Surgical Intensive Care and Coronary Care, Theatres, Catheter Laboratories, ward areas and any other location where LHCH provides a service. Some of this equipment may be connected via medical information networks and/or driven by computer based software systems.

To be able to handle stressful situations involving problems associated with in use medical equipment that maybe in a clinical environment and patient connected. Also, such problems that may contain elements of confrontation with clinicians, nurses, patients and other persons involved with such matters.

To pass on advice to staff within the Trust, in connection with the maintenance, safety and operation of a wide range of highly complex specialist medical equipment connected with the treatment, care and diagnosis of patients

To assist in the gathering of complex and specialist information and to assist in the dissemination of such, where there maybe barriers to acceptance and understanding.

To assist with the implementation and development of policies and procedures regarding medical equipment management to enable the smooth operation of the department. Taking guidance from more senior staff and current standards and regulations.

To assist with Adverse Incident notification, relating to medical devices. Also to complete any investigations required, following receipt of incident reports from senior technical staff within the department.

To assest in the development of test procedures for medical equipment

To assist in the monitoring and supervision of external contractors in relation to medical equipment. This will include detailing work required; co-ordinating appointments of service visits review of work done and confirm job reports.

To liaise with equipment manufacturers and external organisations regarding equipment to be returned for service and / or repair and organise documentation and courier where necessary.

To assist with the management and requisition of parts required for repairs / service or stock items.

To display a high personal standard in respect of selfdiscipline and attitude to work, in view of both the nature of equipment on which he or she may be working and the requirement to liaise and gather information for other healthcare professionals, patients and external organisations in these matters.

To act upon equipment schedules and procedures for the safe maintenance and operation of medical equipment as instructed and ensure that there is accurate documentation to provide evidence of this. Working unsupervised following relevant training /experience and supervised on more highly complex devices such as anaesthetic workstations and life support machines. To professional standards to ensure that the technical safety of the equipment is within the prescribed specifications in compliance with Department of Health guidelines and relevant standards set by statutory regulatory bodies, the relevant equipment manufacturers and departmental procedures. Also, to act promptly, and efficiently in response to emergency and unpredictable situations.

To act upon issues regarding Health and Safety, Hazard notices, Engineering updates and modifications ensuring that the department meets Trust and regulatory requirements. This could include the undertaking of risk assessments.

To commission, repair, maintain, calibrate and carry out planned preventive maintenance of a wide range of medical equipment some of which maybe be specialised and highly complex.

To modify and/or upgrade medical devices as per manufacturer agreed engineering instructions as instructed by Senior staff.

To make recommendations as to the redundancy of medical equipment and provide assistance with its disposal. Also ensure all relevant documentation is completed and filed.

To attend certificated training courses and to update ones own technical knowledge of specialist equipment and to update ones knowledge in respect of the specialised clinical use of such equipment. To disseminate this information to the relevant healthcare specialists as required. To train and supervise less experienced staff. Such training may require travelling (usually within the UK) and staying away from home several times a year.

To work on equipment that will require precision engineering techniques, expertise and fine control of small components.

To observe guidelines and regulations regarding the safe and satisfactory use of highly specialised, expensive test equipment and tools.

There is a requirement to maintain and repair equipment that is subject to contamination by hazardous substances and bodily fluids. To also work on equipment whilst it is exposed to mains electrical supplies, high pressure gases, anaesthetic agents and other hazards which may be encountered as a normal part of the job.

To prioritise and negotiate with other healthcare professionals in obtaining access to medical equipment in order to perform routine maintenance and or repairs at mutually convenient times.

To assist in ordering of spare parts and equipment repairs. To receive equipment and spare parts into the department and ensuring its correct logging, storage and distribution.

To assist with the movement, storage and control of goods and equipment throughout the trust site. Some of which may include the movement of heavy equipment and equipment that resists movement or lifting due to weight or design.

To be responsible for documentation with regards to ones own work, which includes regularly inputting data on to the departments computerised record systems. This can also include records for the acceptance of new equipment, safety tests, fault history, commissioning records and planned maintenance schedules used throughout the department.

To prepare equipment for safe correct carriage for return to manufacturers, third parties and other trusts. Also arrange correct insurance documentation for these items.

Tocarry out all necessary indemnity and safety checks of loan equipment and to advise the staff of the loan period limits. Complete relevant documentation and file.

To work on medical gas systems (MPGS) as a competent person working to relevant HTM (Health Technical Memorandum) for repair and testing of terminal unit outlets and pipeline pressure sensors, some of the work having to be carried out from a ladder in ward ceiling spaces or in outside weather conditions.

To attend all wards and departments to perform audits, maintenance and when necessary, to carry out unplanned repairs; this may involve the movement of heavy equipment, such as large theatre anaesthetic workstations, life support systems and wall mounted patient monitoring equipment also organising availability of equipment through negotiation with senior relevant departmental staff.

To assist with the evaluation / trials of new equipment. To test, evaluate and report on such and provide in depth advice and information on its suitability and compliance with the relevant standards.
