Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for adult echocardiography accredited accredited physiologists (BSE/EACVI) to develop skills and competence within the field of adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). The successful applicant will be offered structured training working towards EACVI CHD/BSE CHD certification and accreditation (Echo in congenital heart disease).

The successful candidate will also maintain BSE/EACVI accreditation by working across all areas of tertiary centre Adult Echocardiography.

Once competent this post will include rotational cover for clinics at satellite sites.

Main duties of the job

As well as training in ACHD echo this position will also allow the successful candidate the opportunity to participate in complex echo techniques including contrast echo, TOE and invasive procedures requiring echo support.

The Echo department covers many specialist areas including ICC, Valve clinic, Cardio oncology and Sports/athlete clinic.

The successful candidate will also assist in the development and delivery of training plans. The candidate should be able to provide evidence of continuing professional development.

  • As a tertiary centre our work is generally complex and specialised; this is an ideal opportunity to develop your skills as an echocardiographer. The Echo department holds advanced British society of Echocardiography accreditation in all areas.
  • The ACHD service is delivered by the Liverpool Partnership (Alder Hey Hospital, Royal Liverpool University hospital, Liverpool Women's Hospital and LHCH)
  • As the level 1 regional provider all adult congenital surgery and interventional procedures are performed at LHCH allowing maximum exposure to congenital heart disease treatment and management. The team are supported by 7 ACHD consultants who work across the region to also deliver care in Manchester, Blackpool and Wrexham.
  • The general adult echo team have developed physiologist led services including valve clinic and contrast clinics.
  • The team work closely with 5 supportive imaging consultants who also have their own specialties. They provide regular training, education and weekly MDT sessions for sharing cases, discussing patient pathways etc.

JOB SUMMARY

To provide experienced and multi-skilled hands-on participation in the complete range of Echocardiography investigations provided by Liverpool heart & Chest Hospital.

To work towards competence and accreditation in adult congenital heart disease.

To provide support for specialist echo techniques including stress and contrast echo.

To provide support for Transoesophageal echo and other invasive procedures.

To assist the Echo lead in designated management aspects of the Echo department

To provide training and assessments to other members of staff of various grades within the given specialty areas.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Competent to perform the complete range of non-invasive cardiac testing.
  • At least 3 years post basic qualification experience in technical cardiology.
  • HNC MPPM or BSc Clinical Physiology, or equivalent academic

Qualification/experience.

  • BSE accreditation or equivalent
  • Prior internal/external experience in delivering teaching material and providing training to others
  • Proven communication skills.
  • Proven people management skills.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Provide specialised technical expertise to the area of echocardiography.
  • Works towards competence and accreditation in adult congenital echocardiography.
  • Performs highly specialised diagnostic cardiac physiological testing on patients to aid clinical diagnosis without supervision.
  • Demonstrates empathy when dealing with patients in distressing conditions.
  • Independently interprets results and provides factual reports for highly specialised diagnostic cardiac investigations
  • Performs necessary adjustments to devices which directly affect patients clinical environment.
  • Communicates effectively and advises both clinical and non-clinical staff regarding outcomes of diagnostic investigations.
  • Undertakes supervision & training for Clinical staff, Trainee Cardiac Physiologists and other allied health professionals.
  • Within their designated area assists the lead physiologist in implementing departmental strategies to ensure continuing development of patient-focused services in line with activity targets and the requirements of the Directorate.
  • Assists lead physiologist in monitoring and maintaining quality of services within designated section.

  • Demonstrates active participation in clinical audit, and R&D activities.

  • Works throughout a number of areas recognising all aspects of infection control measures needed for each specific clinical area.
  • Works within a multidiscipline environment abiding to strict regulations regarding radiation and protection from radiation.
  • Ensures all appropriate health and safety measures are taken when dealing with patients body fluids.

CLINICAL GOVERNANCE / MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists in formulating staff training & development strategies to promote retention & recruitment of high quality Cardiac Physiologists.
  • Performs staff appraisals within a cascade system.
  • Ensures good communication within the department
  • Actively promotes Cardiac Diagnostics, inside and outside the trust.
  • Ensures that clinical governance and clinical risk management are integrated into systems of patient care.
  • Helps to develop benchmarks for best practice alongside other hospitals.
  • Participate in service development/training initiatives with colleagues in referring district general hospitals.
  • Contributes and aids implementation of departmental policies & procedures.
