Job responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY

Assist the Registered Nurse in the, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care.

Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families.

Clinical Responsibilities.

At the direction of the Registered Nurse participate fully in the delivery of planned nursing care, including all aspects of personal care.

At the direction of the Registered Nurse and on completion of appropriate training, undertake a range of clinical duties including the recording of general patient observations; (temp, pulse and blood pressure, general appearance, fluid intake and output), venepuncture and obtaining specimens from patients forward or laboratory testing.

Assist with the preparation of meals, snacks and drinks, assisting patients with feeding as necessary.

Documentation in patients nursing records of any care given, ensuring the entry is countersigned by the registered nurse responsible for the patient at the time.

Involve patients and carers/relatives in the delivery of care.

Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.

Provide escort and transfer for patients, with low dependency, as directed.

Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment, including clearing and cleaning vacated bed spaces and preparation for re-use, secure and handle clinical waste and used linen for safe collection and/or disposal, carry out regular mattress checks and record details in line with trust policy.

Attend to the needs of patients/ visitors, particularly those who may be distressed or require assistance and communicate in a manner that is appropriate to them and the situation.

Care for patients property and valuables in accordance with Trust policy.

Managerial/Leadership

Make suggestions about the effectiveness of the role in order to assist with the development of services.

Ensure the effective and efficient use of resources.

Maintain health, safety and security of patients and staff and report any concern.

Undertake a range of clerical duties in the absence of or in support of the Ward Clerk to ensure a smooth running service including; reception and telephone duties, basic computer skills.

Monitor and maintain adequate ward stock levels of stationery, ward provisions, clean linen etc.

Education and Development.

Develop own skills and knowledge and keep records of development.

Ensure own compliance with regard to mandatory training
