Job summary
This post is for a Locum Consultant in Rheumatology. This is a whole-time fixed term post for 9 months offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
Applicants are required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council at the time of application.
Main duties of the job
Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK or equivalent qualifications), to be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and to be on the Specialist Register or due to obtain their CCT within six months of the date of interview.

Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.
Specialist Regional Services
We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Non-clinical
- Responsible for the training of Speciality Trainees within the department
- Develop Nurse Specialists / Biologic Nurses and Advanced musculoskeletal physiotherapist
- Undertake and supervise Audit/Quality improvement projects and CME
- Attend radiology meetings
- Attend weekly MDT specialty meetings including monthly Clinical Governance Meeting
- Development and promotion of evidence based practice and guidelines
- Active contribution to the departmental Clinical Governance structure
- Multi-disciplinary team working and leadership
- Relevant participation in management
- Other appropriate duties and responsibilities
Clinical
The appointee along with existing consultants will be responsible for the care of:-
- All patients referred by their GP.
- All patients referred by the Emergency Medicine Department
- All patients referred by internal specialities.
- All patients referred by Primary care Musculoskeletal Triage services

Essential
- Full GMC registration at the time of application
- Entry on Specialist Register (or entry expected within 6 months) for Rheumatology
- Success in MRCP or equivalent

- MSc/MD/PhD
- Higher degree in rheumatology or related

- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST in Rheumatology
- Wide clinical experience in Rheumatology
- Experience or ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
- Experience of audit / quality improvement project
- Experience in providing education, and clinical support for nurse specialists, physiotherapists and medical students
Desirable
- Recognised Teaching Skills Course or Qualification Attainment of Level 2 training for educational supervision
- Research and publications relevant to post. Clinical trials experience
