Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Senior Clinical Fellow

The closing date is 17 December 2025

Job summary

The Emergency Department at Whiston Hospital is looking for experienced and enthusiastic emergency medicine doctors to join our committed ED team as Senior Clinical Fellows.

Successful candidates will help us build on our excellent reputation for delivering high quality patient care and be instrumental in enhancing our capacity to deliver a world-class emergency service. The role will not only involve delivering direct clinical care to patients but will also require supervision of junior staff, students and allied health professionals, delivery of teaching, and engagement with departmental quality improvement and governance.

For those candidates who demonstrate commitment to a career in Emergency medicine there will be the opportunity to pursue the Certificate of Equivalent Specialist Registration (CESR). This training is supported by an enthusiastic team of ED consultants, including formal Clinical Educators, who will guide and prepare you for the FRCEM examinations.

Due to the timing of the role and service demand, successful candidates must hold current registration with the GMC at the time of application. The applicant must also have a minimum of 5 years post graduate clinical experience, including at least 2 years NHS experience. Candidates who are not GMC registered or do have not met the minimum clinical experience requirements will not progress through to the shortlisting stage.

Main duties of the job

Whiston Hospital, part of the Mersey and West Lancashire NHS Trust, hosts a busy general Emergency Department, receiving a full range of emergency presentations. The department sees over 110,000 new patients per year of which approximately 25% are paediatric cases.

Whiston Hospital is a designated Major Trauma Unit, with both adult and paediatric trauma teams, working within the Cheshire & Mersey and North West Children's Major Trauma Networks. Whiston Hospital is also home to the Mersey Regional Burns, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit, providing care to patients from Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and the Isle of Man.

In addition to a wide range of inpatient specialties Whiston Hospital also has a hyper-acute stroke centre with 24-hour specialty services.

There are a wide range of clinical opportunities as well as educational, quality improvement and research opportunities available. Successful candidates will be actively encouraged to explore and engage with these.

Due to current service demands, we are only able to consider applicants who have relevant UK experience. Candidates must also be available to commence employment immediately or within a very short timeframe. We regret that we cannot progress applications that do not meet these essential requirements.
