Job summary
Specialist Medical Engineering Technician
Full Time: 37.5 hours
As part of a multi-disciplinary team of specialist medical engineers, your duties will include the commissioning and acceptance testing of new medical devices, carrying out planned maintenance, repairs, fault finding and electrical safety testing on medical equipment of a highly complex nature.
Equipment includes: life support, patient monitoring, patient therapy, diagnostic, ventilatory and anaesthetic equipment which at times may be connected to a patient.
You will be required to work without supervision and conduct diagnostic procedures.
You will take responsibility for the supervision of junior medical engineering staff under your technical control, and the supervision of contract staff carrying out maintenance on Trust premises; these staff could be working with highly complex medical equipment.
You will be required to provide training to nurses, clinical and care staff in the safe use of medical equipment, and keep appropriate records.
You will also be required to participate in an on-call rota providing emergency 24-hour cover to Life support ventilation in Spinal Injuries Unit, ITU and Home Based Patients (HBPs). HBP's medical devices are located on premises outside of the Acute Trust, in HBPs' homes.
All staff will be expected to work in any site location around the Trust, to meet the demands of the service.
Main duties of the job
Technical/Specialist Knowledge
1.1 Technical expertise across a broad range of medical devices and utilise specialist knowledge within a designated field of medical device technology. This specialist engineering knowledge will be gained through formal qualifications (HNC or above), attendance at Manufacturer approved training courses, self study, continuing professional development and practical experience of maintaining and repairing highly complex medical equipment.
1.2 Attend training courses and update individual technical knowledge of specialist equipment and knowledge in respect of specialised clinical use of such equipment. To disseminate this information to the relevant healthcare specialists as required
1.3 Attend mandatory training, to enable the Trust to meet its obligations under its policies and legislation. The post holder will identify personal and departmental training and development delivery needs.

Specialist Regional Services
We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.
